Chugai Beat the Quarter by Borrowing It From the Fourth
A JPY 30bn ERP pull-forward flatters Q3, while the real news is a KRAS head-to-head win and a very quiet retreat from obesity

The beat has a return ticket
Chugai's third quarter looks like a blowout. Revenue of JPY 906.8bn rose 14.1%, core operating profit climbed JPY 85.6bn to JPY 536.1bn, and the core margin widened 0.8 points to 50.2%. Nine-month progress against the full-year plan sits well above the customary 75% benchmark on both lines. But a meaningful slice of that is arithmetic, not momentum. Ahead of replacing its core business system on 13 October, Chugai stuffed wholesalers with product in Q3. CFO Iwaaki Taniguchi was unusually blunt about it: “in the third quarter, ahead of time, we have increased shipping, which was an effect by about [ JPY 30 billion ]” — Iwaaki Taniguchi, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) · 2026-10-27. The ERP introduction is a genuine achievement — and a one-quarter distortion. Kusano confirmed it plainly when pressed: “this is just onetime, which during the term, which will be resolved in the fourth quarter” — Tsukasa Kusano, Head of Project and Lifecycle Management Unit · 2026-10-27. Strip that out and domestic growth still looks respectable, helped by price revision headwinds being absorbed, plus a weak yen that added JPY 40.6bn to revenue and JPY 26.6bn to profit versus plan rates. Yet Chugai declined to formally raise guidance. That is the tell. Two years ago, at this exact point in the calendar, this company revised its core operating profit guidance upward. This time the CEO offered only “we are tracking well against our full year forecast and expect to exceed it” — Osamu Okuda, President and CEO · 2026-10-27 — a verbal nudge in place of a number. When a JPY 30bn timing windfall and a yen tailwind arrive together and guidance stays put, the fourth quarter is carrying more weight than the headline suggests. What actually changed: a win and a withdrawal
The genuinely new item is Divarasib. The Phase III Krascendo-1 study ran a global head-to-head against first-generation KRAS G12C inhibitors and won on both endpoints. Per Kusano: “it reduced the risk of disease progression or disease by 42%” — Tsukasa Kusano, Head of Project and Lifecycle Management Unit · 2026-10-27, with overall survival risk down 44% and a median of roughly 18 months versus about 12 for sotorasib and adagrasib. Filed in Japan within the year. This is a rare thing in oncology — a superiority claim against an incumbent class, published simultaneously in a major journal. The G12C mutation is a modest domestic pool, but globally it is a franchise. Against that, the retreat. Emugrobart, the GYM329 anti-myostatin antibody, is out of obesity. This is not a footnote — it is a reversal of a multi-quarter narrative. In February 2025 the company told investors an incretin was the likely combination therapy partner for obesity; by July 2025 it was sketching the elegant 48-week combination-plus-maintenance design where “once administration is stopped, body weight is expected to increase, but then GYM329 follow-up is given, the body weight increase can be suppressed” — Unidentified Company Representative, Company Representative · 2025-07-24. That story is now gone from obesity and reduced to a smaller SMA indication plus licensing optionality. Note also what vanished from the company's own keyword set this quarter: GYM329, a prior top-gainer, does not appear at all. Management stopped talking about it, and the analysts noticed — Wakao said it out loud: “penetration of Foundayo and GYM329 obesity result was not meeting the initial expectation. So market is looking at your company in a rather pessimistic manner” — Seiji Wakao, Analyst · 2026-10-27.Emugrobart, as disclosed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on September 28, we decided to discontinue development in obesity. After the license is returned from Roche, we will start preparing to resume in-house development for SMA, including out-licensing to third parties.
