AIS Launches Virtual Bank and Doubles Down on Content as Broadband Integration Hits Home Stretch

Thailand's largest telco beats Q2 but keeps guidance conservative, citing H2 losses from its new bank and tough integration.

Overview

AIS delivered a robust Q2 2026, with core service revenue growth, EBITDA margin expanding to 19%, and net debt-to-EBITDA steady at ~2x. Yet management struck a cautious tone, maintaining full-year guidance despite first-half outperformance. The quarter marked two strategic shifts: the official launch of virtual bank Click (with deposit products in July and lending just rolled out), and a new affordable sports content package, PLAY, at THB 199.

I think probably we are going through the hardest part of the integration. This year, as mentioned, we'll really migrate IT systems...

Virtual Bank: From Plan to Launch

A year ago, management described the virtual bank as a distant project: “Obviously, when we invest, it depends on the percentage and the capital initial is only THB 5 billion. So it's nothing for us for next year.” — Montri Khongkruephan, Chief Financial Officer · 2024-11-01 Now the bank is live, and CFO Tee confirmed it's 'going as planned' “...everything is going as planned in terms of both the deposit accounts and the lending accounts.” — Tee Seeumpornroj, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-08-06 However, the company expects an initial loss from the bank in H2, contributing to the flat EBITDA guidance. The bank leverages AIS's alternative data and its loyalty ecosystem, aiming to cross-sell to its large subscriber base.

Broadband Integration and Content Strategy

The fixed broadband integration with Triple T Broadband remains the operational headache. Management guided that the heaviest lift—IT migration and operational consolidation—finishes this year, but Q2 admin costs benefited from a one-time reversal of restructuring accruals. On content, AIS is pivoting from exclusive EPL rights to a broader aggregation strategy: “Definitely, the ARPU per one who used to pay THB 499 will be lower. But we do not worry at all because we believe that the number of subscribers who will hop on to a value package will be many fold more.” — Pratthana Leelapanang, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-06 The new PLAY bundle, including flagship sports content at a steep discount, is designed to combat piracy and expand the addressable market. This mirrors the earlier focus on data centers JVs, where capacity is already oversubscribed. The enterprise recovery also owes to the earlier push into cloud, which management flagged as having a 'solid pipeline' back in 2024: “many partners and customers need more detail on that one. So we have a quite solid pipeline to prepare for the launch next year.” — Unknown Executive · 2024-11-01

Outlook

CEO Pratthana explained the conservative guidance: “For us, it's more of a conservative guide to make sure that we – in the end, we can deliver what we say we want to deliver.” — Pratthana Leelapanang, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-06 Cost headwinds from IT hardware price swings and device shortages are real, but AIS's scale and focus on prepaid ARPU improvements (driven by consumption growth) should underpin resilience. With the integration largely done this year and new products finally entering the pipeline, H2 will test whether the cautious stance pays off.
