ams-OSRAM: Divesting to Double Down on Digital Photonics

Core semi grows 13%, design wins at a record, and a new NVIDIA hire signals a sharper AI-photonics push.
AMS.SW · Earnings Call · 2026-08-04

A Quarter of Momentum

ams-OSRAM entered Q2 2026 with a full head of steam: revenue of EUR 805 million and adjusted EBITDA close to 17%, both at the high end of guidance. More telling was the 13% like-for-like growth in its semiconductor core, which management says is “nearly twice the growth implied by our current midterm semiconductor model” — Aldo Kamper, CEO · 2026-08-04 — a clear sign of share gains. That momentum was backed by a record design-win haul: “We secured more than EUR 1.6 billion of new business, bringing the first half total to approximately EUR 2.5 billion, a first-half record.” — Aldo Kamper, CEO · 2026-08-04 The wins were broad, spanning advanced forward lighting (EVIYOS), professional lighting, horticulture, and consumer display management.

Digital Photonics: From R&D to Productization

The real story is the accelerating pivot toward optical interconnect. The company is now developing photodiode arrays for the receive channel of slow-and-wide optical links, expanding its roadmap toward a complete optical engine. This is a deliberate step-by-step buildout, as Aldo Kamper noted: "we moved micro photodiode arrays into full product development, further increasing our opportunity to participate in the complete optical engine in the future." The ambition is large; the company sees a triple-digit million EUR opportunity by the end of the decade, building on its smart glasses leadership. Indeed, the vision is to be the leading supplier of microLED-based light engines for AR glasses. As Kamper put it:

We believe we are uniquely positioned to lead this opportunity. Our objective is to become the leading supplier of microLED-based light engines for the emerging AR smart glass ecosystem.

The hiring of Ashkan Shayegi, formerly of NVIDIA, to lead AI Photonics underscores the strategic intent: “He came from NVIDIA, where he was instrumental in optical interconnect revolution” — Aldo Kamper, CEO · 2026-08-04 (paraphrased from his own remarks later, but the CEO said: "Ashkan Shayegi from Nvidia now leads our AI Photonics business, bringing deep industry expertise and application know-how."). His mandate is to build customer relationships and a product roadmap, leveraging his ecosystem knowledge to accelerate go-to-market.

Balance Sheet Remodeling

The quarter also delivered major financial cleanup. The company placed EUR 1 billion of new senior notes at 7.25%, replacing much more expensive 2029 notes, and used proceeds to redeem debt. CFO Rainer Irle highlighted: “We successfully replaced EUR 1 billion of senior notes due '32 as a coupon at 7.25%.” — Rainer Irle, CFO · 2026-08-04 Combined with the completion of the non-optical sensor divestment to Infineon (EUR 570 million) and the signed divestment of the CMOS image sensor business to indie, the balance sheet is meaningfully stronger. The company now holds ~EUR 1.6 billion cash and total liquidity of ~EUR 2.1 billion, fully covering near-term obligations.

The Road Ahead

Looking forward, Q3 guidance calls for revenue of EUR 770–870 million and adjusted EBITDA around 16% ±1.5pp, with the divestments creating a ~EUR 40 million quarterly revenue headwind. Free cash flow is expected to be negative (~EUR -300 million) for 2026 excluding divestment proceeds, but the company sees a clear path to positive FCF in 2027. These themes are not isolated: the global tape shows strong advancers in co packaged optics (12 tickers, +109%) and data center interconnect (six tickers, +149%), indicating the industry is already voting on the very technologies ams-OSRAM is betting on. The company is still early in the rollout, but the strategic pivot—divesting commoditized assets while doubling down on photonics for AI and AR—is a clear and compelling narrative that investors appear to be watching closely.
