Backblaze Grew 47% and Gave Back Half Its Market Value
The best quarter in company history landed into a market that just stopped paying for AI plumbing — and management quietly swapped its neocloud pitch for an AI-builder one.

The quarter that should have worked
On the numbers, Backblaze just printed the best operating quarter of its public life. Revenue hit a record $47 million, up 26%; B2 cloud storage accelerated to 47% growth — “our strongest growth rate in 10 quarters” — Marc Suidan, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-11-02 — with B2 ARR of $127 million, up 53%. Customers above $50,000 in ARR grew by 19 to 254, that cohort's ARR more than doubled to $50 million, and four separate agreements above $500,000 in ARR closed in the quarter. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded a thousand basis points to 33%, the GAAP net loss narrowed to $2 million, and full-year revenue guidance went up $5 million at the midpoint to roughly $178 million with Q4 B2 growth guided to about 60% and 40%-plus held out for 2027. And the stock is down about 49% over the last ninety trading days, roughly 64% below its August 13 peak of $20.43, on a market capitalization of $458 million. That gap — between an accelerating business and a collapsing multiple — is the entire story of this report. The market repriced the plumbing, not the company
The global tape tells you most of it. Across both the 90-day and 30-day windows, the decliner lists are overwhelmingly one trade: AI data center exposure. Fifty-five negative tickers in the 30-day bucket alone, spanning IREN, Core Scientific, Applied Digital, Hut 8, MARA and the semiconductor supply chain behind them — "data center capacity," "high bandwidth memory," "co package optics," "critical IT load" all down 25-45%. Backblaze is not a miner and not a memory maker, but it sits in the same mental bucket: a small-cap whose growth is now contractually tied to hyperscale-adjacent capacity. The mechanical arithmetic is brutal. At the last filing the company carried a price-to-revenue multiple of 6.3x; against today's $458 million cap and a $178 million revenue guide, that premium has largely evaporated even as forward growth went up. This is the signature of a category de-rating, not a company disappointment — the equity is being repriced from "AI infrastructure growth story" toward "capital-intensive storage utility" while the P&L is still behaving like the former. Analysts knew it. Jason Ader asked the question directly — were they still comfortable with the CoreWeave timeline “even though you know, there is a lot of concern in the market right now?” — Jason Ader, Analyst · 2026-11-02 — and got a flat yes with a reminder that it is a committed contract with committed minimum ramps. That answer is fine, but it exposes the second problem: the money is back-end loaded. Marc Suidan laid out the shape plainly: “CoreWeave and the other neocloud really start kicking in, in higher gear in Q1, and then Q2 of next year and then full ramp Q3 of next year.” — Marc Suidan, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-11-02 A stock that has already halved is being asked to wait three to four quarters for the revenue it was bought for. From neocloud to AI builder
The most interesting thing in this call is not the guidance. It is a quiet change in which customer the company leads with. Backblaze's own keyword history registers it: Neocloud is the single largest decliner in the quarter's keyword set, while AI builder arrives at the very top as a brand-new, top-momentum theme, alongside AI infra and maturity curve — language that did not exist in prior quarters' top ranks. For three quarters the pitch was neoclouds: 200 of them, a $14 billion capacity-storage market by 2031, engaged with most of the top names, half a dozen live managed-storage conversations. This quarter Gleb Budman opened by describing two customer groups and then spent most of his time on the second one. He pre-empted the obvious read:Fair — but the resource allocation moved, and the vocabulary followed. The replacement narrative is more granular and, frankly, more defensible: AI builders, the venture-funded startups and mid-stage labs that need a capacity storage tier today rather than after a 12-month integration. “The number of new AI builders entering our pipeline doubled in Q3 compared with Q2,” — Gleb Budman, Co-Founder, CEO and Chairperson of the Board · 2026-11-02 Budman said, against a backdrop he sizes at 33,000 venture-funded AI startups. Eleven deals above $500,000 ARR have been announced year-to-date; the anecdote of the training-data provider signing nearly $1 million in 11 days and then adding more than $4 million of incremental ARR for a new workload is the repeatable pattern they want you to see. Two supporting details deserve attention because they are genuinely new. First, an open-source B2 MCP server that lets AI agents use storage directly under customer-defined governance — a distribution channel built for the buyer that AI builders actually are. Second, AI search engines now drive visits up 230% year over year, roughly double market rate, converting at more than twice the rate of traditional organic search. That compounds the striking self-serve datapoint from a year ago, when “our self-serve accounts account creation was actually up 56%” — Marc Suidan, Chief Financial Officer · 2025-11-06 while peers dependent on classic SEO were shrinking.it is not a change in strategy. We still are going after the neo clouds... it is more a statement that the ones that we have signed... these are significant scale up opportunities for us. and I want to make sure that we do a really good job.
The bill arrives before the revenue
Here is where the bear case has real teeth, and management did not hide it. Last filed quarter, capital expenditure was $802,000. Q4 alone is guided to $65-83 million, with full-year PP&E at 55-65% of revenue — roughly a tenfold step-up, in Budman's own framing. Suidan gave the unit economics: a two-year payback, and “for every dollar of ARR we are adding, we need to fund $2 of CapEx.” — Marc Suidan, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-11-02 The accounting consequence is the part the tape is probably pricing:That lands on a 62.8% gross margin that was itself manufactured by a useful-life extension a year ago — a ten-point two-year improvement now set to run in reverse for several quarters, even as operating income has been improving steadily toward breakeven. Funding is not the issue: $230 million of cash, a zero-coupon convertible, and capital lease lines give access to over $400 million, and a new cap call hedge offsets dilution up to $33 and $76 per share — comfortably above where the stock trades today. Oddly, the same build-out has made them choosier. With demand broad-based across every segment, “it is actually allowing us to be more judicious with the customers that we are bringing onto the platform at this point,” — Gleb Budman, Co-Founder, CEO and Chairperson of the Board · 2026-11-02 Budman said — a seller's market, if a lonely one to be priced as.We are adding capacity ahead of customer ramps which means depreciation will begin before the associated revenue temporarily reducing GAAP gross margins by 3 to 6 percentage points.
