Bristol-Myers: Growth Portfolio Carries the Load, but Timing is the New Watchword

A beat-and-raise quarter, a re-sequenced pipeline, and a still-disciplined BD machine — the question shifts to execution and timing.
BMY · Earnings Call · 2026-07-30

The quarter: growth is where it's at

Chris Boerner opened the call with “We delivered another excellent quarter, driven by disciplined execution across the business.” — Christopher Boerner, Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-07-30 That discipline shows in the numbers: “Growth portfolio revenue rose 14% to $7.6 billion, now representing nearly 60% of total revenue.” — David Elkins, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-07-30 The pivot from legacy to growth is accelerating — Eliquis still anchors the old guard, up 21% on demand, but the newer franchise (Reblozyl up 29%, Breyanzi 41%, Camzyos 59%) is now the real engine. The imminent PDUFA date for iberdomide marks the first commercial CELMoD, a milestone that could redefine the multiple myeloma standard.

Pipeline timing: the art of patience

Not everything cooperates. Milvexian's AFib readout slipped to Q1 2027 and the ADEPT program's timeline for Alzheimer's psychosis moved to early 2027. Cristian Massacesi framed the delay constructively: “I see favorably this delay because actually it give us more confidence that we are a target for both the primary endpoint, noninferiority and the secondary endpoint is superiority on bleedings.” — Cristian Massacesi, Chief Medical Officer · 2026-07-30 The primary endpoint design is unchanged, but investors now must weigh a longer wait against the potential for a stronger readout. Meanwhile, Sotyktu in lupus remains a key catalyst later this year.

Financial firepower and BD discipline

The balance sheet gives Bristol room to be selective. Total revenue of $13B supported a raised full-year guide on both revenue and EPS. Management reiterated business development as the top capital-allocation priority, but with the same discipline they've shown all along: “BD continues to be a top capital allocation priority for us.” — Christopher Boerner, Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-04-30 That patience was echoed earlier in the year when Boerner said, “We don't need to chase deals.” — Christopher Boerner, Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-02-05 The focus is on therapeutic areas they know well, with science that fits and financials that make sense. As the CEO put it in closing:

We're doing what we said we would do. Today's results really underscore the impact of what we see as a multiyear strategy to reshape our business and drive sustainable growth.
