Broadridge's Tokenization Counter-Punch

Record sales, named customers, and AI savings flip the narrative from disintermediation to infrastructure.
BR · Earnings Call · 2026-08-04

From Fear to Evidence

When Broadridge reported fiscal Q4 2026 on August 4, the market had a year of therapy under its belt. The stock had fallen 31% from its August 2025 peak, largely on a narrative that tokenization would turn the company's proxy and post-trade infrastructure into a toll booth for a bypassed road. This call was management's rebuttal. “building the infrastructure for the financial markets of tomorrow, markets that will be digitized, agentic and increasingly tokenized” — Timothy Gokey, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04 was not just rhetoric - it was backed by a suite of commercial wins and a record quarter. The company generated $2.0B in total revenue (+8% YoY), adjusted EPS of $9.60 (+12%), and record closed sales of $305M. The market took notice: the stock is up 20.6% over the last 90 days, though still well off highs. This is a classic 'the market was wrong' setup, and the data suggests a re-rating is underway.

Tokenization: Theory Becomes Contracts

For three quarters, management had talked about tokenization as an opportunity. In the February 2026 call, an analyst framed it bluntly: “there's a big debate out there, and you've seen this in your share price that tokenization is actually something that's gonna work against you.” — Alex Kramm, Analyst · 2026-02-03 This quarter, Tim Gokey's answer was to name customers and quantify volume. DLR, the distributed ledger repo platform, now processes $360 billion in tokenized repo transactions daily, up 3x from May 2025, with G7 securities entering the network. He announced a partnership with tokenized asset issuer Ondo for synthetic equity governance, an agreement with custodian Alpaca, and the first on-chain voting for tokenized equities with Galaxy - all described as the leading players in each model. When asked about unit economics, he was explicit: “we're using the same rate schedule” — Timothy Gokey, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04 - a direct answer to the bear thesis that tokenization would compress pricing.

Tokenization has the potential to reshape how assets are issued, traded, financed and serviced, and we expect it to be a significant tailwind for Broadridge.

Timothy Gokey, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04
The new DLX platform, built on DLR, extends tokenization to equities, funds, alternatives, and money markets, all on one set of rails. This is not a defensive play; it is an aggressive bid to become the infrastructure layer for the next market structure.

Agentic AI: Cost and Product Moats

Alongside tokenization, Agentic AI shifted from a capability to a financial driver. Management is embedding AI into products - the custom policy voting engine, BondGPT, trading algorithms - and also using it internally. CFO Ashima Ghei guided to $25 million in AI-driven productivity savings in fiscal 2027, primarily in technology, which will fund reinvestment while still expanding margins. On the competitive side, Gokey argued that AI deepens the moat: “there are going to be unique AI products that clients will take on or not take on based on their own characteristics... and then there's this broader question about what I'm going to call the agentic operating system” — Timothy Gokey, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04. This dual use - product innovation and internal cost reduction - is a new, concrete message that the market had only hypothesised about before.

Sales Inflection and a New Regulatory Catalyst

The sales story was equally turning. After a slow start, Q4 closed sales hit a record $158 million, lifting the year to $305 million and the backlog to $470 million. The pipeline is up more than a third year-over-year. This directly answers the concern from the April call, when Gokey acknowledged sales cycle elongation: “we're just trying to interpret what we're seeing... we think we're seeing an elongation in our closing process.” — Scott Wurtzel, Analyst · 2026-04-30 Now, he attributes the Q4 surge to a freeing up of large deals and strong mid-market flow-through. Guidance for fiscal 2027 calls for 6-8% recurring revenue growth and 8-12% adjusted EPS growth, with event-driven revenue moderating but a new tailwind from the SEC's e-delivery rule proposal. The proposal, which allows institutions to default client communications to digital, is a e delivery rule proposal that management says will be a modest headwind to revenue growth over the next 2-3 years but a positive for margins and largely offset by new solutions. It also strengthens their digital-first platform, Weather InFocus, a strategic asset they believe is unmatched.

Valuation: The Market's Skepticism Creates an Entry

The financials support the thesis. Price to Revenue has dropped 39% over the past year to 2.6x, while the company continues to compound revenue at high single digits and returns 110% of adjusted earnings as free cash flow. The company bought back a record $600 million of stock and raised the dividend 12%, a signal of confidence. Historically, the market has awarded Broadridge a premium for stability and growth; the current valuation suggests it is pricing in the bear case without the offsetting upside of tokenization and AI. If management's execution continues, the stock offers a classic reversal trade - but it requires believing the narrative is now backed by contracts, not just slides.
