Cognex's Data Center Pivot: AI Vision Meets AI Infrastructure
A Quarter of Records and First-Time Guidance
Cognex kicked off its second-quarter report with a familiar beat: record revenue of $268M, a 71.5% adjusted gross margin, and adjusted EBITDA margin that surged to 32.2%—1,150 basis points above the prior year. Yet the more consequential news was on the horizon. For the first time, management issued full-year guidance, a departure from its historical practice of only guiding a quarter ahead. CFO Dennis Fehr explained the shift: “We felt confident enough to put out this guide, while we may not know everything at this moment.” — Dennis Fehr, CFO · 2026-08-06 The confidence stems from stronger-than-expected demand across nearly all end markets, leading to upgraded outlooks for logistics, packaging, electronics, and semiconductor.
Data Centers: From Side Business to Strategic Growth Platform
The real strategic pivot is in data centers. CEO Matt Moschner laid out the evolution with a block quote that captures the shift:
We've been serving the data center market for several years, but it was always a smaller portion of our business. What's changed, obviously, is the very aggressive build-out of new facilities and in particularly very high-tech AI-oriented facilities that are placing demands on the supply chain that are driving demand for Cognex vision.
Data center revenue is still low single digits as a share of total, but it is growing 30%+ year-over-year. Moschner described three application layers—component manufacturing, rack assembly, and deployment/maintenance—with the current revenue concentrated in the first. This is a natural extension of data center themes that have been dominating the global market, as evidenced by the elevated attention to memory price dynamics and AI infrastructure investment across this quarter's earnings calls. Cognex's OneVision platform is a key enabler, allowing customers to solve complex inspection problems that were previously intractable. As Moschner noted in prepared remarks: “Recently, we announced the general availability of OneVision with hundreds of customers already using the platform to reduce deployment complexity, shorten time to value and scale AI-driven vision applications.” — Matt Moschner, CEO · 2026-08-06
Operating Leverage and the Shift to Productivity
The margin story is not just about mix from data centers. Management has been executing a cost-reduction program that will deliver $35M in annualized net savings by year-end. The focus is now shifting from cost reduction to productivity—growing with existing resources. This aligns with the company's channel partner revitalization and Salesforce transformation, which are meant to expand the customer base without proportionate OpEx growth. Dennis Fehr elaborated on the pricing environment, which is dealing with memory cost inflation: “If you think back, 2024 was a year where we had pricing headwinds impacting gross margins. Now '25 was a neutral year. I would say in the first half of this year, pricing was a net positive on gross margin.” — Dennis Fehr, CFO · 2026-08-06
This echoes the prior quarter's discussion, where the company was already highlighting the data center supply chain as a contributor to electronics strength: “We're also starting to see some contribution from the demand driven through the electronic component supply chain from data center build-outs as well.” — Dennis Fehr, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-05-07 The February call had also laid the groundwork for the portfolio optimization that is now flowing through margins: “It is really all about focusing on noncore or getting out noncore product lines, which do not have growth or low growth, and which have low margins.” — Dennis Fehr, CFO · 2026-02-12
The financial results corroborate the narrative. While gross margin is below its 2016 peak, the operating margin has inflected sharply upward, reaching 23% this quarter. The company's free cash flow conversion remains above 100% on a trailing basis, and management is returning nearly 80% of free cash flow to shareholders. With the full-year guide implying 15% revenue growth and 29–31% adjusted EBITDA margin, Cognex is positioning itself as a leveraged play on the data center AI wave, with OneVision as the technological wedge.
