Temporary Cacesa Pain, Permanent E-commerce Gain at CTT

A de minimis shock hits customs clearance, but the core e-commerce and mail engine stays healthy — with a transparent split guidance and a fresh buyback.

A Temporary Shock to a Structural Growth Story

CTT's first-half 2026 report is a study in contrasts. The core engine — CEP volume and Mail — is firing on all cylinders, with organic revenue growth of 6.3% and e-commerce volumes up nearly 21% organically. But the spotlight is on a fresh and idiosyncratic headwind: the end of the de minimis exemption on July 1, which has hit the customs clearance business Cacesa hard. Management is adamant this is temporary, but the market is rightly focused on the variability. Guy Pacheco opened the call by framing it: “We had a very healthy organic growth of 6.3% with strong contribution from our CEP business.” — Guy Patrick Guimarães de Pacheco, CEO · 2026-07-29 Yet the same paragraph acknowledges the elephant in the room: “the pressure in Cacesa is temporary in nature linked to this regulatory transition.” — Guy Patrick Guimarães de Pacheco, CEO · 2026-07-29 That duality runs through every metric. The numbers paint a clear picture: E-commerce Solutions grew 12.7% organically, but EBIT fell 26.9% owing to Cacesa's high incremental margin. Rerouting flows away from Madrid to Eastern and Central Europe has reset market shares, and the company is already pivoting to B2B clearance and fulfillment — an integrated play that management believes offers a competitive edge.

Mail's Hidden Resilience

Beyond the Cacesa noise, Mail & Services delivered a strong quarter. Excluding the 2025 election effect, revenues grew ~5%, and recurring EBIT margin expanded from 5.4% to 7.5%. Joao Sousa highlighted the acceleration in public debt placements and the growing subscriptions: “We continue to see a strong customer demand for saving certificates supported by the attractiveness of this product” — Joao Carlos Sousa, CEO · 2026-07-29 Health plans continue to scale, adding 55,800 customers, up 13% year-on-year.

Transparent Guidance, New Optionality

The guidance refresh is split between a confident core and a cautious Cacesa. Recurring EBIT for the core is guided at €105M–€110M, with the overall range at €115M–€125M. Management also announced an additional €10M buyback, citing balance-sheet flexibility. The company is leaning into the regulatory reset as an opportunity to reweight toward higher-value services. As Guy Pacheco noted in Q&A, “we have 2 similar events in the recent past, the first on the U.S. and the other on de-minimis on 2021, where the impact of the non-European marketplaces was felt between 6 to 9 months” — Guy Patrick Guimarães de Pacheco, CEO · 2026-07-29 — a historical precedent for a return to growth. But the market is right to keep a watchful eye. The Chinese big-platform GMV declines are steep, and November brings an additional €2 fee per parcel. Prior calls have shown how sensitive these flows are: “we expect both a volume increase and a slight margin increase during the fourth quarter” — Guy Patrick Guimarães de Pacheco, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) · 2025-10-31 was the refrain a year ago, and “The growth will start with some meaning in 2026” — Guy Pacheco, CFO · 2025-05-09 was the bank's promise that has now been pushed further out. The question is whether the company can offset the customs drag with the diversification it's pursuing.

We are also guiding, I should say, with a lot of transparency. We are breaking our guidance in 2 parts.

This split guidance is the right call. It separates the temporary from the structural, and it gives investors a clean line of sight into what management controls versus what is at the mercy of regulators and marketplace supply chains. Ultimately, CTT is a Spanish-Portuguese e-commerce logistics play with a growing financial services arm and a world-class postal network. The de minimis shock is a test of that thesis — and so far, the underlying engine remains healthy.
