Ecolab's Liquid-Cooling Pivot: Why AI's Thirst Became Its Moat

Q2 2026 shows a company that has found its next growth engine in data center cooling, reaffirming 2027 margin targets.

The Pivot to AI Infrastructure

Ecolab's second quarter was another beat-and-raise, but the real narrative is a strategic pivot that has quietly repositioned the company from a hygiene and water specialist into an indispensable partner for the AI economy. The acquisition of CoolIT Systems, closed on July 2, was the keystone. "CoolIT is off to a very strong start. With year-to-date sales growth prior to acquisition of more than 100%" (component 6901700769367182909). The global high-tech platform—now incorporating legacy microelectronics, Ovivo, and CoolIT—is running at roughly $1.5 billion in annualized sales and is expected to grow more than 25% annually to $4 billion by 2030 with a 25% operating income margin. This is a massive step-up from the $150 million platform the company had in 2021.

The vision was crystallized in the prepared remarks:

At the heart of AI is water. Water is required to produce, to power, and to cool chips. We are now the only company integrated solutions across that value chain.

Christophe Beck, Chairman and CEO · 2026-07-28
That positioning is underpinned by an integrated end-to-end cooling platform that combines CoolIT's direct-to-chip liquid cooling with Ecolab's 3D TRASAR digital monitoring. The company will showcase this at Supercomputing Chicago on November 17, an event that promises to be a major catalyst.

This is not a bolt-on; it's a structural shift. In prior quarters, Ecolab talked about CoolIT in the context of an acquisition, but now it is the centerpiece of its growth story. The keyword trajectory shows "High Tech" accelerating to the top of the company's own keyword ranks, and cold plate technology entering the lexicon. The company is no longer just selling chemicals; it is solving the thermal and water challenges of the densest compute environments on earth.

Execution and Margin Discipline

Beneath the AI narrative, Ecolab demonstrated operational resilience in the face of commodity inflation. The company quickly implemented a global energy surcharge, allowing pricing to strengthen to 4% in Q2 and to step up to 5-6% in the second half. "We moved quickly to implement a global energy surcharge backed by incremental customer value as we always do" (component 6901700769367182909). This is not new—management has a long history of converting surcharges into structural pricing—but the speed and discipline stand out. "We have learned to master this very well," as Christophe Beck noted in April (component 5651833736946468388).

The margin math is straightforward and was reaffirmed on the call: adjusted operating income margin of 19% in H2, with a clear path to the 20% target for 2027. The roll-off of Nalco amortization helps offset the incremental CoolIT amortization, as CFO Scott Kirkland explained. “We have been very consistent, by the way, on making sure that we stay on our commitment of delivering 20% operating income in 2027.” — Christophe Beck, Chairman and CEO · 2026-07-28 This commitment is supported by the fundamentals: operating income is up 12% year-over-year, and the company's operating margin has expanded even as gross margin dipped 70 basis points due to transitory cost pressure.

Riding the Broader Wave

Ecolab is not alone in chasing the AI infrastructure buildout. The global tape is crowded with mentions of data centers, high bandwidth memory, and liquid cooling. But Ecolab's entry point is unique: it owns the water. The keyword AI infrastructure has surged across global earnings, and Ecolab is now a critical enabler. The company's connected devices (nearly 800,000 deployed, targeting 1 million by year-end) tie into its digital and pest intelligence businesses, but the real upside is in data centers.

Prior to this quarter, the growth engine narrative was broad. As Beck said in April, "Global High Tech is going to become, most probably, our strongest growth engine in the near to long-term future" (component 8454835035424424243). That prediction is now materializing. With CoolIT growing at triple-digit rates and Ovivo tracking to mid-teens, the $4 billion target by 2030 looks increasingly achievable. The company's overall organic sales growth accelerated to 5%, excluding Middle East disruptions, and underlying volume growth is tracking toward 2%.

The market is taking notice. Shares are up 3% over the past 90 days, and the long-term trend remains firmly higher. Ecolab has evolved from a defensive compounder into a growth stock with a clean narrative: the company that cools the AI age.
