A Mixed Quarter with a Margin Silver Lining

EL.En. S.p.A. reported Q1 2026 revenue of EUR 145.6 million, up 3.3% year-over-year, but the headline masks a sharp divergence: medical sales jumped 9.3% (over 11% organically) while the industrial sector contracted 11.4%, led by a 15.5% drop in the cutting segment. Despite the volume weakness, group EBIT margin improved to 13.6%, up more than a point, thanks to a favorable sales mix and a notable recovery in industrial gross margins—from 34% in Q1 2025 to 38% this quarter, versus a stable 48% in medical. CFO Enrico Romagnoli attributed the industrial margin rebound to geography and product mix: "Q1 2026 witnessed a return to a decent sales volume in Europe and in the U.S. and accordingly, a decrease in the total share of sales in Italy. The effect on margin was evident." “The weak sales performance in Brazil was in this quarter the missing piece that didn't allow us to convert the material margin improvement into a volume effect sufficient to better cover the expenses from operation.” — Andrea Cangioli, CEO · 2026-05-18 Management sees this as a structural turning point, having previously flagged industrial margin erosion as a key drag.

Leadership Transition and Innovation

A more consequential event is the resignation of General Manager Paolo Salvadeo, effective April 30, for personal reasons. CEO Andrea Cangioli went out of his way to reassure investors: "We confirm there are currently no plans to appoint a replacement for the general manager position." “Thanks to the robust management structure Dr. Salvadeo has put in place, we do not expect any impact on our day-to-day efficiency or operational continuity.” — Andrea Cangioli, CEO · 2026-05-18 This is a high-visibility change for a company where General Manager has been a recurring keyword, and prior commentary often referenced the Paolo Salvadeo leadership. On the product front, the company continues to push innovation. The flagship sales mix is shifting toward high-margin aesthetic anti-aging devices, led by ONDA PRO. Cangioli noted, "We are expecting an unprecedented number of imitations being introduced on the market" on ONDA PRO, underscoring the need for IP protection. New launches in thulium lasers for surgery and urology are slated for later this year, which should support medical momentum.

Outlook Confirmed

Despite the industrial dip, management reaffirmed guidance of ~5% consolidated revenue growth and EBIT margin improvement for 2026. They attribute the confidence to a healthy order book and a robust pipeline, expecting the industrial sector to recover as tax incentives stabilize and as Brazil recovers. The Q1 net financial position improved by EUR 1.5 million, historically a cash-absorbing quarter, which signals working capital discipline. Analysts probed on RAM cost inflation and Middle East exposure. Cangioli said RAM costs are immaterial, while Middle East weakness is mainly in low-margin hair removal—so the impact is accretive. The company also highlighted the new US subsidiary for Quanta's surgical business and ongoing distribution cooperation in physiotherapy, indicating a measured M&A path.

We can therefore confirm the guidance we released a couple of months ago that we target a consolidated revenue growth of about 5% and that as we did in Q1 '26, we count on improving our EBIT margin on a yearly basis as well.

The resignation of the GM introduces an element of leadership uncertainty, but the company's clear emphasis on management depth and unchanged strategic targets suggests a smooth transition. Meanwhile, the industrial margin recovery is a genuine positive—if sustained, it could drive earnings leverage as volumes return. Investors will be watching whether the Margin improvement in industrial translates into full-year profitability, and whether the medical sector can continue to offset macro headwinds. In prior calls, the company faced similar challenges—hair removal weakness, US duties, and Italian industrial softness—but also consistently highlighted a robust order book. This quarter's mix shift and leadership handover add new dimensions to the story. The market's response will likely hinge on execution over the next few quarters.
