Erdene's Transition Accelerates: Record Production, Grade Gains, and a Moly PEA on the Horizon

Hitting the ramp-up stride while expanding resources and advancing a potentially value-unlocking molybdenum study.

A Producer's First Full Quarter Delivers on Promise

Erdene Resource Development (ERD.TO) has crossed the threshold from developer to producer, and its first full quarter of commercial operations shows a company hitting its stride. The Bayan Khundii gold mine delivered 11,709 ounces in Q2 2026 — a 37% jump from Q1 — with ore grade improving 25% to 2.4 grams per tonne and gold recoveries consistently running at 96%, well above the 93% target. Management’s focus on mining efficiency is translating directly to the bottom line. As CFO Robert Jenkins noted, once the grade reaches the 3.5 g/t target, “we expect to see the ASIC end up in the range of about USD 1,500 per ounce” — Robert Jenkins, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-08-17 — a meaningful drop from the roughly USD 2,000 per ounce recorded this quarter. This operational momentum is not just a one-quarter blip. Peter Akerley, CEO, emphasized that reconciliation between modeled and mined grades is now aligning, with dilution falling from 30–40% toward the 20% level and a target of 10%. The company is producing at 94% of plant capacity and sees room to run at or above 1,750 t/d on a steady-state basis. With Bayan Khundii generating strong cash flow and the first debt repayment already made, the foundation is set for the next phase of growth.

Expanding the Pie: Dark Horse, Heap Leach, and Altan Nar

The real story lies beyond the current pit. Erdene is aggressively advancing its satellite deposits to extend mine life well past the initial reserve life. The updated resource statement now shows 835,000 ounces of M&I gold at 2.9 g/t plus 265,000 ounces inferred, supporting a production horizon "in excess of 10 years." Central to this is the Dark Horse deposit, a high-grade satellite only 2.5 km from the plant. Grade control drilling is underway to accelerate Dark Horse into mill feed in H2 2027, ahead of schedule, which should boost head grades further.

We feel like after we get this drilling done in Q4, we will update the resource again and be targeting somewhere around 100,000 ounces as a baseline to justify the start-up of a moderate-sized heap leach facility.

Peter Akerley, President and CEO · 2026-08-17
The potential for a heap leach operation adds another layer of optionality. Multiple oxide sources — Dark Horse, Altan Arrow, and low-grade stockpiles at Bayan Khundii — could feed a new facility. Management is leveraging Mongolia’s established heap leach track record and has engaged Blue Coast Research for amenability testing, with recoveries expected in the 60–70% range. A decision could come as early as 2027, adding a complementary production stream by 2028. Altan Nar, 16 km north, is being reassessed with fresh eyes. Metallurgical work shows that up to 80% of the ore is amenable to CIP processing, with 89% gold recovery in high-grade samples. Instead of building a standalone flotation plant, trucking ore to Bayan Khundii now looks superior — saving $140–150 million in capital and leveraging existing infrastructure. The deposit’s 5.5 km mineralized corridor, largely untested, offers significant exploration upside.

Zuun Mod: A Hidden Molybdenum Jewel

Beyond gold, Erdene is advancing the giant Zuun Mod molybdenum-copper project, with a PEA due within 60 days. The deposit sits 200 km from China, the world’s largest molybdenum consumer, and the market backdrop is strong: molybdenum prices have stabilized above USD 30/lb, supported by supply deficits and growing demand from specialty steels and emerging chip applications. Management is already fielding offtake interest from Asian counterparties and has engaged development banks. “I think it's a good time from a market perspective” — Peter Akerley, President and CEO · 2026-08-17 — but the real value could be in restructuring the project. Akerley noted, “we'll also begin to look at what opportunities do we have corporately to restructure, spin out” — Peter Akerley, President and CEO · 2026-08-17, hinting at a potential unlock of shareholder value.

Why It Matters

Erdene is no longer a single-mine story. The operational ramp-up is demonstrably on track, and the pipeline of organic growth — Dark Horse, heap leach, Altan Nar, Zuun Mod — provides multiple catalysts over the next 12–24 months. The market has yet to price in the Zuun Mod potential, and the upcoming PEA could be a re-rating event. With a solid balance sheet and a clear capital allocation plan, Erdene is positioned to transform from a junior producer into a multi-asset, multi-commodity district developer. The next few quarters will be telling.
