Underwriting Recovery Takes Hold
In the face of a challenging 2025, Erie Indemnity posted a markedly better second quarter. CFO Julie Pelkowski noted that “the combined ratio improving 13 points in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2025” — Julie Pelkowski, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer · 2026-07-31. The improvement came from a sharp drop in catastrophe losses—15 points of the combined ratio versus 22 points a year ago—and a nearly 3-point improvement in non-catastrophe losses. This brought the six-month combined ratio to 101.6%, down from 112.6% in the first half of 2025. The stronger underwriting results, combined with solid investment performance, lifted policyholder surplus to approximately $10.7 billion at the end of June, up from $10.1 billion at year-end. This financial strength underpins the company's ability to invest in growth initiatives.Growth Moderates, Pricing Discipline Remains
As pricing has become more adequate and competitive market pressures persist, Erie is deliberately slowing its growth engines. “Direct written premium grew 3.3% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to 9.2% in the second quarter of 2025” — Julie Pelkowski, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer · 2026-07-31. The company is not broadly lowering rates; instead, it is pursuing targeted reductions where justified. This discipline is paying off—average premium per policy rose 6.8%, even as policies in force dipped slightly. This strategic pivot is evident in the financials: operating income increased to $204 million in the quarter, and net income rose to $180 million, reflecting both better underwriting and controlled expenses. As we move into the second half of 2026, we know the environment remains competitive, but we're encouraged by the progress we're making across products, services and technology and the improvements we're seeing in our financial performance as we remain focused on supporting our employees and agents, serving our customers and continuing to strengthen the business for the long term.
