Evotec's Trough Is Dated — But the $30 Million That Flattered Q3 Wasn't
A Vertex commercial contract, a strategic review reduced to a holding statement, and a near-breakeven quarter built on partner work rather than a step-change

The Quarter That Flattered
Evotec's third quarter looks like a turning point on the surface. Group revenue of €164.9 million was essentially flat year-on-year against €163.9 million, and adjusted EBITDA swung to a loss of just €1.6 million from a loss of €15 million. Nine-month numbers are far uglier — revenue down 13.1% to €465 million, adjusted EBITDA deteriorating to minus €44.3 million from minus €16.9 million — but the Q3 snapshot is what management wants you to look at.
The problem is what sat inside it. Asked to break out strategic milestones, CFO Claire Hinshelwood was unusually blunt: “there was round about EUR 30 million included, and we would expect that to be quite a bit less in the fourth quarter” — Claire Hinshelwood, CFO or Finance Executive (inferred from discussing income statement and financials) · 2026-11-05 — and, pressed further, confirmed there were zero clinical development milestones in Q3 and likely none in Q4. That single admission bridges the apparent contradiction between a near-breakeven quarter and a full-year guidance range of minus €105 million to minus €70 million, which implies a Q4 loss somewhere between €26 million and €61 million. The beat was a timing artifact of commercial execution on existing partner work, not a step-change in the P&L.
The honest framing came from CEO Christian Wojczewski: “we see 2025 as a trough with regard to net sales, and 2026 actually the trough when it comes to revenues” — Christian Wojczewski, CEO or Senior Executive (inferred from leading the call and discussing strategy) · 2026-11-05. That is a CEO dating his own bottom two years into a de-rating. It is also, notably, a more concrete statement than anything offered in the last four calls.
What Management Stopped Saying
The most revealing signal is lexical. In the prior quarter's keyword set, Evotec's language was dominated by the machinery of a waiting game: order book ranked first, sales orders second, market environment fourth, with the strategic review still a live topic. All four have fallen out of the top tier this quarter, replaced by Base business, commercial manufacturing, Evotec Biologics, net sales and a promise of a stronger earnings profile.
That is not cosmetic. For four straight calls, analysts badgered management for order-book disclosure and got deflections — in May, the CEO said of the order book, “that's not a number that we publish” — Christian Wojczewski, CEO · 2026-05-06, then offered a qualitative narrative about rebuilding what 2024 had consumed. This quarter the company substituted hard leading indicators: base-business net sales up 24% year-on-year, inbound leads up more than 45%, proposal turnaround time down roughly 20%, customer base up about 10%, and a pipeline of around 20 opportunities representing approximately €1 billion of total potential deal value. Conversion, at last, is being measured rather than asserted.
The strategic review, however, has gone the other way — from the number-one keyword of 2024 to a one-sentence holding pattern.
You are asking me to give my holding statement. The review is ongoing, Charles.
That should give readers pause. Evotec is simultaneously publishing a confident €1 billion-by-2030 mid range framework and refusing to say what its own strategic review has concluded. Both cannot carry equal weight.
Vertex Is the First Hard Proof Point
The genuinely new item is Vertex Pharmaceuticals selecting Just – Evotec Biologics for commercial manufacturing of povetacicept at the J.POD Redmond facility, with a PDUFA date of 13 November. “It's not a lot of time left until the PDUFA date, and that's why you should not expect that there is a lot of stuff still to be done” — Christian Wojczewski, CEO or Senior Executive (inferred from leading the call and discussing strategy) · 2026-11-05, the CEO said — a rare instance of Evotec offering a dated, checkable catalyst.
It also forces a reckoning with prior guidance. On the August 2025 call, an analyst asked whether adding another J.POD would mean a pivot back to an asset-heavy model; the answer was flat: “That's definitely not a plan” — Christian Wojczewski, CEO · 2025-08-13. Eighteen months later, Evotec is funding a third manufacturing train at Redmond, causing a planned temporary pause in 2027 manufacturing activity whose revenue hit is already baked into the plan. Management insists this is not a pivot — a small fraction of the Toulouse-era spend, no further extension contemplated through 2030 — but it is capex nonetheless, in a year when liquidity fell €65 million in a single quarter to €401 million.
The Arithmetic of the Ambition
The 2030 framework is explicit: roughly €1 billion of group revenue, split 40/20/40. D&PD base business to about €400 million at roughly 10% CAGR; strategic partnerships to about €200 million at roughly 5% CAGR, risk-adjusted and deliberately excluding royalty income until 2030; JEB to about €400 million at roughly 20% CAGR. Adjusted EBITDA margin of 20% by the end of 2028, above 20% by 2030 — from minus €44.3 million of nine-month EBITDA today.
The 2028 margin target predates this call, but the path underneath it now leans on a JEB segment whose nine-month revenue fell 18.2% to €117.1 million, and on a risk-adjusted partnership trajectory the company itself draws as a wavy band rather than a line.
The Tape and the Sector
No price tape was served for EVT.DE in this data set, so the market's verdict is unavailable — which itself means the argument rests on fundamentals and language rather than on a return outlier. What the cross-section does show is that preclinical demand may be thawing industry-wide: Charles River reported robust demand for safety assessment studies, and across the global keyword tape IND enabling studies is the single strongest twelve-month theme, up roughly 118% on names like AMLX, ABCL, XENE and KYMR. If biotech pipelines are restarting, Evotec's 2027 revenue — built from the 2025-26 order book — is where it should show up first.
On AI, the tone has unmistakably hardened. In May the company's position was that AI was embedded in the offering and “it's not a number that we usually can single out” — Christian Wojczewski, CEO · 2026-05-06. This quarter: “This is real. This is being applied at Evotec in order to do new partnerships, accelerate the drug discovery” — Christian Wojczewski, CEO or Senior Executive (inferred from leading the call and discussing strategy) · 2026-11-05, backed by the Jazz phase I entry, the Odyssey autoimmune collaboration, and the appointment of a new Chief Scientific Officer — Joanna Holbrook, ex-Novo Nordisk — effective 1 November. The Molecular Patient Database, built over a decade, is the asset management now names as the moat.
What Actually Changed
Three things, in descending order of durability. Vertex converted JEB from a promising platform story into a named commercial customer with a date. The company swapped order-book narrative for measurable conversion indicators and admitted its Q3 was milestone-flattered. And a strategic review that once topped the keyword list has been reduced to a rehearsed sentence, even as a 2030 blueprint is published alongside it. The 2027 guidance in January, and whatever the review eventually concludes, will tell you whether the trough the CEO just dated is a floor or a ledge.
