Q2 blowout results and a bold new category are positioning Fortinet to capture an expanded TAM in AI-driven security.

A Paradigm Shift: The SASE Firewall

Fortinet's second-quarter results were nothing short of spectacular. Billings grew 33%, product revenue jumped 52%, and free cash flow more than tripled to nearly $1 billion. But the real story was a new category that CEO Ken Xie believes will define the next era of network security: the SASE Firewall. By merging secure networking and Unified SASE onto a single FortiOS operating system, Fortinet aims to replicate the UTM-to-NGFW transition of two decades ago. “Similar to UTM NextGen firewall replaced the traditional net-based firewall 20 years ago, I believe this new SASE Firewall, which addresses the fast-growing area of SASE, AI and quantum represent another massive opportunity for accelerated growth with a much larger total addressable market.” — Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman and CEO · 2026-07-29 This is not just marketing; it's a strategic response to the convergence of network security, a theme that has been building for years. The convergence is now being accelerated by AI, and Fortinet positions itself as the only vendor that develops all key components in-house, including its own ASICs and global infrastructure.

AI: The Tailwind That Keeps Giving

The company's momentum isn't a flash in the pan. Management believes AI is fundamentally changing the security landscape, driving both new attacks and new defenses. CFO Christiane Ohlgart noted that "bad actors are leveraging AI to automate and scale sophisticated attacks," which in turn is pushing enterprises to upgrade their security infrastructure. This is reflected in the numbers: product revenue growth of 52% was driven by customers "shifting towards higher-performing models" to secure AI workloads. “We exceeded the high end of our guidance across billings, total revenue, operating margin and earnings per share... Free cash flow more than tripled year-over-year to $966 million.” — Christiane Ohlgart, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) · 2026-07-29 The AI infrastructure buildout is creating a massive opportunity for Fortinet, which already leads in OT security—a critical bottom layer for AI data centers. The company's Sovereign SASE offering is also gaining traction, as customers demand on-premise enforcement for data privacy and regulatory compliance.

Durability Beyond the Quarter

A key question from analysts was whether this growth is durable or just a pull-forward. Ken Xie dismissed the idea of artificial demand, citing strong unit growth and a long-term technology roadmap. He also highlighted the partnership with Intel to advance ASIC-based security processing. “I believe so far, we are still the only cybersecurity company develop on ASIC chip. And the partnership with Intel also very, very significant because Intel is probably the only manufacturer in the U.S. probably do all this kind of chip manufacturing.” — Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman and CEO · 2026-07-29 This echoes his past conviction from prior calls, where he emphasized the importance of internal R&D over acquisition-driven growth. “I feel it's important to recognize all this internal R&D innovation capability that drive the company with all the new growth and the new function, which instead of a depend on acquisition...” — Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman and CEO · 2025-11-05 That long-term commitment is now paying off, as evidenced by the company's raised guidance for the full year.

Financials at a Glance

The balance sheet is equally strong. Total revenue reached $2.05 billion, up 26% YoY, with product revenue surging 52% to $773 million. Service revenue grew 14% to $1.27 billion, and management expects the service growth rate to accelerate further. Operating margin hit a record 38%, up 490 basis points, while free cash flow margin was an exceptional 49%. The company repurchased $973 million of stock in the first half of the year, demonstrating confidence in its own future.

Stock Market Verdict

Investors have voted decisively. Over the past 90 days, Fortinet's stock is up 100%, though it has pulled back about 9% from its August 4 peak. The market is clearly buying the SASE Firewall narrative, but the forward valuation is not cheap at ~8.4x revenue. Still, with the company executing on all fronts and AI demand rising, many see this as just the beginning.
