Gentian Diagnostics: A Record Quarter That Was Really a Contract Negotiation
Q3 sales hit a record NOK 51.1m, but the call's real content was seven assay projects, two unsigned veterinary deals and a management team that still won't say what any of it is worth.

A record that is thinner than it looks
Gentian Diagnostics is a NOK ~618m-market-cap IVD reagent maker that just posted its best quarter ever: “Quarter three sales were highest ever quarterly sales at NOK 51.1 million, which is a 22% growth or 30% revenue or currency neutral organic growth.” — Matti Heinonen, CEO · 2026-10-20 EBITDA nearly doubled to NOK 13.6m from NOK 8.4m, gross margin jumped to 61%, and cash climbed to NOK 91.4m even after a NOK 9.3m dividend. On the surface, a small-cap compounding its way forward. The arithmetic underneath is more interesting. Year-to-date sales of roughly NOK 145m, up 11%, against a Q3 up 22%, implies first-half growth in the mid-single digits — this was a reacceleration, not a steady glide. Europe grew 24% in the quarter, the U.S. 23% (and 49% year-to-date to NOK 32.3m). But the company's signature franchise, Cystatin C, was carried by a 19% Q3 recovery after management conceded that “Year-to-date, it is flat. That is largely due to Asia, where we see that in China we have some lower sales than we had last year.” — Njaal Kind, CFO · 2026-10-20 Roughly three-quarters of the business still sits in two products — Cystatin C and BÜHLMANN's fCAL turbo — and one of those two was flat for nine months. Quality of earnings deserves a footnote too. Njaal Kind flagged that last year's quarter carried NOK 5.5m of capitalised development spend that this year does not, and that the raw-material line got a one-off boost: “I think what we can attribute to production yields is about NOK 2 million for the quarter.” — Njaal Kind, CFO · 2026-10-20 Strip those out and 61% gross margin is a very good quarter, not a new plateau. The pipeline is becoming the product
Here is the real story of this call. Read the keyword set for the quarter and the vocabulary has almost entirely changed register. The top of the list is not product names or regions — it is assay development, high sensitivity, commercial terms, milestone payment, broad pipeline. That is licensing-deal language, not selling-reagents language. Matti Heinonen has effectively re-underwritten the equity as an R&D partner to larger IVD players: seven assay projects plus one technology project active, spanning a partner assay entering verification with a Q4 2027 launch, the Essange transfer of assays onto turbidimetric platforms, two veterinary assays with a named-but-unnamed key player, and internally originated work including a first-in-market liver disease PETIA assay. The ambition is not subtle. Management claims up to 100x sensitivity improvement in early prototyping, which opens roughly 100 additional biomarkers to the PETIA technology platform. And they are explicitly reframing what Gentian is: “we will be the innovation partner for global IVD companies.” — Matti Heinonen, CEO · 2026-10-20 Note the defensive hedge attached to the new point-of-care ambition — “we are not pivoting our strategic focus away from the core lab, where we are strongest.” — Matti Heinonen, CEO · 2026-10-20 Nobody says that unless investors have asked. The honesty is unusual — and the silence is the signal
What makes this call worth reading is that management declined to dress the pipeline up.That is a rare admission for a company whose entire valuation rests on product launches. Equally rare is the refusal to quantify. Asked about addressable markets and which project carries the most revenue potential, Heinonen answered: “before we can talk about the biomarker or biomarkers, us giving any numbers would be fluffy and difficult to substantiate if we can't talk about exactly that market, the competition, the growth.” — Matti Heinonen, CEO · 2026-10-20 The reason given — partner confidentiality across one-to-three-party negotiations — is legitimate. The consequence is that the sell-side has nothing to model except faith and a 20% ROI threshold. And the deals are not done. On the veterinary projects: “until a final contract is signed, there's always a risk.” — Matti Heinonen, CEO · 2026-10-20 First revenue there is guided to late 2027/2028. Milestones from the new technology are explicitly not expected this year. Two other projects were parked during the summer for lack of customer commitment. We can be honest that we are not very happy with the recent number of launches, which are not many, and to really deliver the sustained growth and also the expectation from the market, we need much more product launches.
