Société Générale delivers record H1, upgrades targets, and primes for CMD
Société Générale opened its Q2 2026 results with a clear message: execution is ahead of plan. The group posted record H1 net income of EUR 3.5 billion, beating its 2026 annual targets, and announced a EUR 1.5 billion extraordinary share buyback plus an interim dividend up 23%. The CEO, Slavomir Krupa, summed it up: "Our high-quality financial performance during the first half of 2026 puts us ahead of our 2026 annual targets and results in a record net income for the group of EUR 3.5 billion." Ahead of targets, again
The group's cost/income ratio improved to 59.7% in H1, already below the year-end target of 60%, while operating expenses fell 5% year-on-year. The margin expansion was broad-based: the French Retail, Private Banking and Insurance pillar saw cost/income fall to 55.5% and net income surge 38%, with RONE up to 14.7%. This was driven by strong net interest income growth (+14.9%) on the back of Livret A repricing and continued fee momentum. The CEO stressed the structural nature of the cost savings: "Our actions on costs are paying off -- continue to pay off, driving greater efficiency with operating expenses down minus 5% versus H1 '25." (component_hash: 1850484008372472687)
Notably, the group upgraded its full-year guidance: cost reduction is now expected around -4% (vs -3% prior) and ROTE around 11% (vs above 10% prior). This is the second consecutive upgrade and sets the stage for the upcoming Capital Markets Day on September 21, where the CEO has promised a 2029 strategic plan.
Capital return: the pivot investors wanted
The extraordinary buyback and interim dividend signal a decisive shift in capital distribution. With CET1 at 13.2% after the buyback, the bank is now clearly managing excess capital toward shareholders. This is a recurring theme from prior calls -- in February, Krupa said, "We have said minus EUR 100 million at the CMD, minus EUR 150 million of GOI to support the growth ambition. It has actually been positive." (component_hash: 1695289584185473708) The market has long awaited a capital return lever, and this quarter delivers.
In the Q&A, Krupa addressed the bank's strategic stance on equities, which underperformed versus peers: "We were invited to the party, but we didn't drink so much alcohol." (component_hash: 8211913360562480257) He explained the preference for stability and profitability, but also reaffirmed investments in prime services and organic growth. This is the same message as prior quarters -- from the October 2025 call: "We have been having this conversation for a while, so to speak. And I think we have been strategically predictable from this perspective." (component_hash: 7229783599336231879)
There is a strategic preference and has been for the last 5 years since I was back then the CEO of CIB, strategic preference for stability and profitability over, let's say, the particular opportunity in one particular quarter.
What changed? The proof of execution
The underlying theme is not a strategic pivot but a confirmation that the transformation is working. The extraordinary share buyback is a tangible output. The NII growth in French retail is a sign of sustainable earnings power. Meanwhile, Ayvens is normalizing as guided, and GBIS continues to deliver high-tech RONE at 19.9%.
Investors now look to the CMD for the next leg. The CEO hinted at further efficiency gains and organic growth after the balance sheet is fully optimized. As he said, "We are committed to operating leverage, right? So imagine a 2027, which is very buoyant in terms of growth. Obviously, maybe the cost base doesn't go down in absolute terms. But definitely, we are deeply committed... to a significant value creation through operating leverage." (from prior call, component_hash: 8368325876573107356)
This quarter's results are not a one-off. They are the culmination of three years of execution, and the buyback plus dividend make it tangible for shareholders. The stock has re-rated, but the CMD will determine if it can sustain a premium.
