Gentex's $4 Chip Is Now $40 — and the AI Data Center Boom Is Why
Gentex holds its 2027 revenue guide but cuts the margin that goes with it, as data-center demand starves the automotive circuit-board supply chain.

The margin guide is the tell
Gentex's Q3 headline looks almost flat: revenue of $647.7 million versus $655.2 million a year ago, with automotive sales down to $552.5 million. But the quarter came in light. “revenue came in approximately $35 million below our beginning of quarter forecast due to certain customer issues and delayed launches” — Steven R. Downing, President and CEO · 2026-10-23, CEO Steve Downing said. The gross margin line is where the report gets uncomfortable: 33.4% versus 34.4% a year ago, and a sharp step down from Q2's 37.0%. Part of that Q2 number was optical — analysts noted an $18 million IEEPA tariff benefit that flattered the quarter, “I know you took $18 million that helped gross margin this quarter” — Joseph Spak, Analyst · 2026-07-24. Strip that out and Q2 was closer to 34%, so Q3's 33.4% is not a collapse, but it is still a decline. The bigger tell is the out-year. Gentex reiterated its 2027 revenue outlook of $2.8 billion to $2.9 billion, 6% to 9% growth, even with primary-market light vehicle production forecast down about 1%. But it reset the margin conversation: “next year is probably more in that 33 to 34% range” — Steven R. Downing, President and CEO · 2026-10-23. In July, management had called 34% to 35% the “sweet spot” — Steven Downing, President and CEO · 2026-07-24. That is a quiet cut to the profitability of the growth story.Data centers are eating the car's circuit boards
The fresh supply-chain wrinkle is not memory alone. It is circuit boards. Neil Boehm explained that the problem sits several layers below Gentex's direct suppliers: “it is actually subcomponents multiple tiers below that material is getting consumed and replaced for data center circuit boards” — Neil Boehm, COO and CTO · 2026-10-23. In other words, data center demand is pulling capacity and components away from automotive board production, tightening supply and pushing prices up. Downing put a number on it: “Anywhere from 8x to 10x price increases on a per unit basis... a component that cost $4 or $5 this earlier year is now $40” — Steven R. Downing, President and CEO · 2026-10-23. That is nearly the same formulation he used in Q1 2026, when he said “If a chip is $4 and now it's trading for $40, obviously, the supply base can't eat that on their own” — Steve Downing, President and CEO · 2026-01-30. The difference is that the pressure has spread from DRAM into raw boards and multiple tiers of the electronics supply chain. Gentex is not an AI beneficiary here; it is a cost victim of the AI data centers buildout. The global tape shows that trade cooling over the last 90 days, but the supply-chain squeeze is still working through automotive allocations. Management is seeking appropriate reimbursement from customers, but recoveries lag costs and carry little margin once collected.Non-auto is the offset — and the PCBA award is real
The bull case is that Gentex is no longer just a mirror company. Non-automotive revenue rose about 17% and reached 15% of total revenue, up from 12%. Premium audio jumped 27% to $54.7 million; aerospace and fire protection grew 13% and 36%, respectively. The company also booked its first PCBA award — an existing automotive customer, annualized at about $180 million, with production expected in 2029. That lands at the high end of the $100 million to $200 million range management sketched in Q2 2026: “The first award, we believe, will be probably between $100 million and $200 million” — Steven Downing, President and CEO · 2026-07-24. It is a genuine new leg, but it does not solve 2027. The near-term growth drivers remain high content per vehicle, DMS/ICMS, and the dimmable visor program slated for Q4 2027. Those are real, but they are racing against a mirror base that is still shrinking in China and Europe. China, notably, has shifted from “still in decline” in July to “basically at a stable level” now — stabilization, not recovery. The buyback is the confession
The stock is down 18.6% over 90 days, 20.4% from its June peak, and 45% from its 2021 high. At a $4.35 billion market cap, Gentex trades at 11.8x free cash flow and roughly 13x earnings. Management is using that: Gentex repurchased 5.7 million shares for $132.6 million in Q3 at an average of $23.44, roughly double the $69 million repurchased in Q2, and $270.2 million year to date. Downing did not hide the logic:He has the balance sheet for it — $351 million of effective net cash — but the buyback is also a signal that management thinks the market is wrong about the durability of margins. The market is voting that the cost inflation is real and the 2027 margin reset is not temporary. The stock has not performed at all really well over the last year... When we look at these prices versus what our growth rate and our cash generation is over the next couple years, we struggle to understand the stock price. And so when we see downturns like this, we tend to get more aggressive...
