HOCHTIEF: The Quiet Giant Building the AI Hyper-Scale Era

Group raises guidance as data-center orders surge and Turner's margin hits 4.0% — but can the skeptics be silenced?
HOT.DE · Earnings Call · 2026-07-27

A Transformation Few Appreciate

HOCHTIEF’s half-year results punctuate a makeover that often flies under the radar: a German conglomerate now sits at the epicenter of the AI infrastructure buildout. Revenues grew 13% (FX-adj) to €20.1bn, operational net profit jumped 35% to €480m, and free cash flow pre-factoring hit €2.4bn over twelve months. The group finished June with a €72m net cash position, a €1.5bn year-over-year improvement. The headline: operational net profit guidance for 2026 was raised to €1,025–1,100m, implying 30–40% growth versus a prior 20–30%.

Data Center Tsunami

No division embodies the shift more than Turner. First-half sales grew 23% (FX-adj) to €14.1bn and operational PBT surged 49% to €551m, with margin up 70bp to 3.9%. Data-center bookings alone reached €13.3bn in H1, up ~50% y/y, and Turner’s total order backlog hit €46.1bn (+39%). Management detailed the pipeline in three buckets: €22bn under construction, €20bn already awarded but still in design, and a third bucket of announced projects. The Meta Louisiana campus expansion is typical — a $50bn project that Turner, as one of two contractors, will help deliver across 5GW and 10 million sq ft. In Canada, a CAD13bn AI-optimized data center adds another leg, with €5bn in the second bucket and €6bn still to be formalized.

That additional expansion, it's around EUR 50 billion, but out of which we believe that the data center themselves, removing GPUs, et cetera. The addressable market is around EUR 27 billion.

Juan Santamaría Cases, CEO · 2026-07-27

CEO Juan Santamaría was emphatic about the longevity of the cycle: “We see all of that, we see our orders, we see the skepticism in the market, we just get surprised.” — Juan Santamaría Cases, CEO · 2026-07-27 He cited hyperscaler CapEx plans — Alphabet at $185–205bn, Meta at $125–145bn — to underline that demand remains unbroken.

Self-Performance and Margins

The margin expansion is not accidental. Turner’s margin rose from below 2.5% in 2022 to ~4% today, driven by verticalization: “We believe that self-performance drives two things. The first one is margin, the second one is self-performance capabilities and obviously resilience.” — Juan Santamaría Cases, CEO · 2026-07-27 This company-specific self performance strategy — converting workshops and leveraging a global workforce to add premium mechanical and electrical services — differentiates HOCHTIEF from pure-play general contractors. The focus on addressable market and time to market underpins the entire approach.

Bottlenecks and Skepticism

The market’s concern about permitting and grid interconnection is valid, but management argues data centers don’t vanish — they relocate. “Data center doesn't get canceled. It moves.” — Juan Santamaría Cases, CEO · 2026-07-27 Turner’s footprint in 47 U.S. states gives it the flexibility to chase projects as conditions change. The company is also building a European edge network, with a new Blackpool data center project and a Berlin win. Meanwhile, HOCHTIEF is expanding critical minerals capabilities via Sedgman and Vulcan Energy, positioning for the next wave of resource demand.

Guidance and Outlook

The guidance raise reflects both near-term beat and medium-term confidence. CEO Santamaría: “Both. It does both things.” — Juan Santamaría Cases, CEO · 2026-07-27 He reiterated the 2030 revenue target of €30bn for Turner (up from €20bn at the last CMD) and highlighted the Thiess acquisition, which adds full ownership of a mining-services powerhouse with ~€80m annual accretion from 2027. In Germany, the €500bn infrastructure fund should further accelerate growth, and defense, nuclear, and biopharma verticals add diversification. “We are surprised how confident and how much visibility we have in data center market versus sometimes what the market is seeing.” — Juan Santamaría Cases, CEO · 2026-07-27

HOCHTIEF is a rare construction play with direct exposure to the AI infrastructure supercycle. The question is whether the market’s skepticism about data center CapEx will be proven wrong. If management’s order pipeline is any guide, the company is just getting started.
