LINK Mobility: The RCS Kicker Arrives, but SMSPortal Still Skids
Organic growth snaps back to 7% and buybacks get bigger; the next leg depends on iPhone RCS penetration and fixing South Africa.

The snap-back is real — but the mix is doing the work
LINK Mobility's Q3 2026 call had a clean headline: “7% organic gross profit growth in the quarter, bringing us back to high single-digit growth ... an acceleration of 5 percentage points quarter-over-quarter and was at the high end of our expectations” — Thomas Berge, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) · 2026-11-04. Organic adjusted EBITDA grew 7%, reported adjusted EBITDA jumped 37% to NOK 268 million on acquisitions, and management raised its H2 organic gross profit growth outlook to high single digit while pointing to similar growth in 2027. For a small-cap telecom-services name that had spent recent quarters talking about integration, contract wins and net retention, this is the first clear acceleration after three softer quarters. The question is whether it is a durable re-rating catalyst or a mix-driven bounce. The growth was not evenly spread. Enterprise organic revenue accelerated to 10% in stable currency, helped by a strong Western Europe quarter, while Global Messaging revenue fell 6% on lower volumes from a few large customers. Yet Global Messaging gross profit rose 6%, so the segment returned to growth at the profit line even as reported revenue shrank. That is a better-quality result than the revenue line suggests, and it explains why management is leaning on customer mix rather than price. As the CEO put it, price is “very stable in the enterprise segment ... In 2026, price reductions are very small. It's well below NOK 10 million in yearly effect” — Thomas Berge, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) · 2026-11-04. This is a volume-and-retention story, not a pricing story.
RCS: the first genuinely new growth lever in years
If there is one company-specific keyword that stands out in this report, it is RCS adoption. It did not appear in LINK's prior-quarter top-30 list; now it sits alongside penetration rate as a central pillar of the equity story. The reason is simple: RCS in the Nordics has been stuck because iPhone users were not addressable. That changed in September, when Tele2 became the first Swedish operator to activate RCS on iPhone. Management expects more operators to follow in Q1 2027.The reference point is France, where RCS volumes scaled from around 6 million in 2023 to an estimated 80 million in 2026. LINK argues the Nordics could move faster because customers are already testing RCS through pilots and proofs of concept, and because LINK can apply its French playbook directly. That is a credible narrative, but it is still a narrative. When asked to quantify the revenue or gross profit opportunity, the CEO said: “We're not ready to sort of go in and quantify this as of now. We need to see how quickly the mobile operators, the other mobile operators follow Tele2.” — Thomas Berge, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) · 2026-11-04 The RCS option is real, but it is an operator-led call option, not a 2026 P&L line.Tele2 came out in Sweden and introduced RCS on iPhones, iOS. Then from experience in other countries, that is sort of like a kicker for other mobile operators to follow as well ... the penetration rate goes from 20%, 30% to 80% plus.
AI is a tailwind, not yet a number
The second new theme is AI agent messaging. LINK frames AI as a structural tailwind: more consumer responses, more multi-turn conversations, more demand for richer channels like RCS and WhatsApp, and more value in trusted orchestration across channels. It has external validation — Juniper Research named LINK a Leading Challenger in Conversational AI in 2026 — and a plausible product story around MyLINK Connect. But the call was refreshingly honest about the current numbers. Asked whether AI-agent messaging is showing up in actual volumes, the CEO said it is “mostly forward-looking. We have some contracts that we have under implementation or just being implemented ... so far, the impact on the numbers are small” — Christian Nygaard, Investor Relations or Moderator · 2026-11-04. That is the right contrast to the broader AI enthusiasm in the market: LINK has a logical seat at the table, but it is not yet an AI revenue story.SMSPortal and the cash-flow wobble
The blemish is SMSPortal. The South African acquisition was supposed to be a level-up deal with leading A2P market position, 5,500 customers and roughly 16 billion messages sent over the last 12 months. Instead, growth has been below expectations for two quarters. Management pointed to two non-recurring issues in the prior-year comparatives: concatenated messages on selected customers due to a format error, and an unusually high international seasonality that did not repeat. “This is the first year we owned the SMSPortal. So there are 2 elements in the 2025 numbers that we didn't basically understand the reach of ... Two more non-recurring events.” — Thomas Berge, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) · 2026-11-04 The domestic business is healthier, growing around 7% with net revenue retention of 104%, and there is still a backlog of 670 million messages to implement. But Q4 guidance is only low single-digit gross profit growth in fixed currency, with a return to mid- to high single-digit growth expected after that. The keyword list tells the story: domestic business is now a top-ranked theme, while SMSPortal itself has dropped out of the top-30. Management is reframing around what is working. That is understandable, but it also means the burden of proof has shifted to Q4 and 2027.
Cash flow also needs a caveat. Q3 operating cash flow was NOK 63 million, adjusted operating cash flow NOK 81 million, and LTM adjusted operating cash flow NOK 688 million with 67% adjusted EBITDA cash conversion. But the quarter contained a temporary working capital build of NOK 140 million, roughly half of it from one top-10 customer's payment process. “We had an effect in Q3 related to one of our biggest customers, which had some issues in their payment process ... the customers already paid us and settled the outstanding amounts into Q4.” — Morten Edvardsen, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) · 2026-11-04 That is a timing issue rather than a credit issue, but it is exactly the kind of item that can obscure an otherwise solid cash-generation story.
Capital allocation: buybacks move up the queue
The most important strategic signal may be capital allocation. Accretive M&A remains the first priority, and LINK has completed seven acquisitions since 2025 — six bolt-ons and one larger level-up deal. But the company also raised its 2026 shareholder distribution target to NOK 330 million to NOK 400 million from NOK 300 million in 2025, and management explicitly said share buybacks are the preferred form of distribution at current valuation levels. That could reduce the share count by roughly 11% to 12% versus 2025.The nuance is that LINK is not abandoning larger M&A. It is just not ready to chase it. “Bolt-ons are the first priority on M&A ... We are talking to level up targets as well, keeping them warm, but we're not ready to reengage aggressively as of now.” — Thomas Berge, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) · 2026-11-04 With leverage at 1.9x adjusted EBITDA, below the 2.0x to 2.5x policy range, and an equity ratio of 53%, LINK has room to do both. The message is discipline: buy back stock when it is cheap, keep the bolt-on pipeline warm, and preserve capacity for a larger deal only when the valuation and market conditions align.
So what changed? Organic growth accelerated, RCS moved from theory to a real iPhone rollout, and buybacks became a bigger part of the return case. What did not change? AI is still a forward-looking tailwind, SMSPortal is still below expectations, and working capital can still muddy a quarter. LINK is not riding a broad global theme in this report; it is a company-specific execution story with a newly visible catalyst. The next checkpoints are simple: Q4 SMSPortal growth, operator follow-through on RCS in the Nordics, and confirmation that the working capital build truly normalizes.
