LSEG's AI Pivot: From Disruption Fears to Data Tailwinds

H1 2026 shows subscription growth accelerating, Data & Feeds at 7.7%, and MCP emerging as a new monetization layer.

An Exceptional Half, an AI-Led Rebuttal

LSEG reported a standout H1 2026. Organic revenue growth of 8.4%, subscription growth accelerating to 6.3%, EBITDA margins up 260bps (140bps from the SwapClear renegotiation, 120bps underlying), EPS +17%, and free cash flow per share +37%. The company raised full-year revenue guidance to 7%-7.5% and margin guidance to ~100bps improvement. But the real story lies in how CEO David Schwimmer married these numbers to a year of AI disruption debate. He opened with a confident counter:

Here we are a year after the first wave of perceived AI disruption hit last summer. And there's now a year of evidence on the impact of AI. ... We have higher growth, higher sales, higher retention, higher margin.

David Schwimmer, CEO · 2026-07-30
This is a company that has turned the AI narrative on its head. Rather than seeing its data intermediary role threatened by frontier AI, LSEG argues that its AI infrastructure—proprietary, regulated, real-time data—is more valuable than ever because models need trustworthy inputs. "AI has enhanced the value of LSEG. AI has increased the need for and therefore, the value of our data because our data is verifiable, it's auditable and its proprietary" (“AI has enhanced the value of LSEG. AI has increased the need for and therefore, the value of our data because our data is verifiable, it's auditable and its proprietary.” — David Schwimmer, CEO · 2026-07-30).

Data & Feeds: The Engine Accelerates

Nowhere is this more visible than in Data & Feeds, which grew 7.5% organically in H1 (7.7% in Q2) and is poised to overtake Workflows as LSEG's largest revenue line. Oliver Carruthers from Goldman Sachs pressed on the trajectory, and David outlined the structural drivers: a 15-20 year decoupling of data spend from industry headcount, plus new distribution like MCP and the headless Workspace. "Data & Feeds has been a great business. We have been adding a lot to it in terms of both new data sets and new distribution channels and AI really just turbocharges that" (“Data & Feeds has been a great business. We have been adding a lot to it in terms of both new data sets and new distribution channels and AI really just turbocharges that.” — David Schwimmer, CEO · 2026-07-30). This theme resonates beyond LSEG. Across the tape, data centers and AI compute are driving demand for structured, enterprise-grade information. Aalberts and APLD both highlighted AI infrastructure as a growth vector in recent calls, confirming that the entire ecosystem—from power to connectivity—is scaling for AI. LSEG sits at the logical data layer.

MCP: A New Distribution Channel, for Now

The most debated item is MCP (Model Context Protocol). LSEG has engaged 200+ customers since launch, and tool calls grew nearly 5x from May to June. Yet management is deliberately downplaying 2026 monetization, instead framing MCP as one-third of AI-related commercial discussions. CFO Michel-Alain Proch was explicit: "So MCP, for sure, will be monetized. And by the way, we are already sending some invoices because the client actually asked us to have a price framework for the rest of the year, but it's minimal. And we will see that more in 2027, but certainly, it won't move the needle in 2026" (“MCP, for sure, will be monetized. And by the way, we are already sending some invoices because the client actually asked us to have a price framework for the rest of the year, but it's minimal. And we will see that more in 2027, but certainly, it won't move the needle in 2026” — Michel-Alain Proch, CFO · 2026-07-30). Investors keep trying to force a formula, but David pushed back: "Guys, you're all trying to build mathematical formulas into models as to exactly how this is going to play out in 2027. ... We have put out the monetization framework today. It is the framework that we have already seen some of our customers engaging on" (“Guys, you're all trying to build mathematical formulas into models as to exactly how this is going to play out in 2027. ... We have put out the monetization framework today. It is the framework that we have already seen some of our customers engaging on” — David Schwimmer, CEO · 2026-07-30). What is clear is that LSEG is embedding itself into agentic AI workflows, whether through MCP, Teams, or the headless Workspace. The company is positioning as the “trusted partner” for regulated enterprises, and its long-standing LDA relationships (now 18% of D&A revenue) give it a moat that competitors can’t easily replicate.

What Changed, and Why It Matters

The real change is a shift in perception. Twelve months ago, the market feared AI would obliterate LSEG’s desktop terminals and analytics. Instead, the company has proven that AI creates new demand for its data—through new channels, new products, and deeper customer engagement. The retention rate is near 93%, gross sales hit a record £482m, and the New Product Vitality Index is 25%. Subscription revenue growth is set to accelerate to 6.7% in H2, and the 2027 outlook implies further acceleration. LSEG is now in the upper echelon of AI beneficiaries, not victims. As David closed: "We feel as if we are just getting started" (“We feel as if we are just getting started” — David Schwimmer, CEO · 2026-07-30). For investors, the stock has been a steady compounder, but the market is only beginning to price in the MCP upside. This H1 report provides hard evidence that AI is a tailwind, not a threat—and that LSEG’s data flywheel is spinning faster than ever.
