Strategic Divestitures Refine Focus

Materialise is shedding non-core assets to double down on its growth engines. In Q1 2026, the company announced the transfer of RapidFit and its Eyewear business to their respective management teams. "Today, we are announcing a similar step for our eyewear activities," said CEO Brigitte de Vet. This follows the earlier divestment of RapidFit in March. The rationale is clear: focus capital and leadership on the medical and software segments where the company sees the most opportunity. As de Vet explained in the prior quarter, "the strategy that we have is to focus on those segments where we see not only growth in the longer term in terms of additive." These moves free up resources and sharpen the company's portfolio.

Medical Innovation and Resilience

The medical segment remains the bright spot. Revenue grew 7% year-over-year, and on a constant currency basis, double-digit growth. Two product launches underscore the innovative momentum: custom PEEK implants and OrthoView 3D Hip. Both integrate into the existing digital workflow, as de Vet highlighted: "The new offering integrates seamlessly into our existing digital workflow and completes our offering." The company also partnered with HP to include Magics Print for HP on its new MJF 1200 printer, broadening its reach into mid-market segments. Despite a 200-basis-point dip in medical margins, management remains confident. De Vet noted in an earlier call, "So the medical market as such, so structurally, again, I don't see a reason to see a change in the growth that we see in the currently in the medical market." The seasonality and foreign exchange explain the margin variation.

Margin Expansion and Operational Discipline

The first quarter showcased strong operating leverage. Revenue was stable at EUR 66.3 million, but gross margin expanded to 57.2% from 55.3%. Adjusted EBIT jumped to EUR 2.5 million from EUR 0.6 million. "With revenue stable, this margin expansion reflects disciplined cost management, operational efficiencies and a sharper focus on our core growth segments," said CFO Koen Berges. The software segment also improved its profitability, with recurring revenue now at 83% of total software revenue. The company generated positive free cash flow, and its net cash position rose to EUR 72.8 million. This financial discipline is critical as the company navigates macroeconomic headwinds across its end marketts, particularly in Europe and the automotive sector.

Guidance and Outlook

Despite the divestitures, Materialise reaffirmed its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of EUR 273-283 million and adjusted EBIT of EUR 10-12 million. This shows confidence in absorbing the loss of revenue from the divested businesses. As Berges put it, "You're correct in stating that both divestments that we did in our Manufacturing segment are on a consolidated level from a number point of view, not material... Now at this stage, we believe that we will be able to absorb that gap." The company expects manufacturing to return to positive EBITDA in 2026. While the macro environment remains uncertain, the strategic focus on high-growth segments positions the company for sustained improvement.
