NPK International: The Grid Buildout Behind the AI Hype

A pure-play matting provider, NPKI has zero data-center exposure — and that's exactly why its guidance is climbing.

Not a Data-Center Stock

When the market's collective eye is glued to AI server buildouts, NPK International's second-quarter call was a breath of fresh air. CFO Gregg Piontek was blunt when asked about data center slowdowns:

we have no mats deployed on data center build-out or development.

The data centers keyword topped NPKI's quarterly list only because analysts raised the question — but the company's real business is the grid that connects those loads. As CEO Matthew Lanigan explained, “these large load cases will have to be tied into the grid versus sort of behind-the-meter temporary kind of accommodations… and all of that is opportunity for us as those lines are constructed.” — Matthew Lanigan · 2026-07-30 The company is essentially a pure play on utility transmission infrastructure, not on the servers themselves.

Riding the Transmission Wave

That distinction matters because it removes NPKI from the volatility of AI capex cycles. Management reported a 20% year-over-year increase in quoting volumes, and noted the pipeline is "fairly advanced and locked in." “Our pipeline is fairly advanced and locked in.” — Matthew Lanigan · 2026-07-30 Even more reassuring, they see no spillover from the recent market jitters: “we're not seeing any impact of, I think, what's been affecting participants in the space over the last few days.” — Matthew Lanigan · 2026-07-30 The demand is being driven by utility customers rebuilding aging infrastructure and preparing for the next wave of high-voltage lines — a theme the company has been riding for over a year. As Lanigan said back in late 2025,

we are reasonably early in this wave of spending.

The pipeline composition also reflects deliberate diversification: earlier this year, Lanigan noted that “about 2/3 of that, I'd say, is really focused on our share of wallet expansion with existing customers” — Matthew Lanigan, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-02-26 — a sign that growth is not just market pull but internal execution. He has also been preparing the market for the timing of high-voltage projects, noting in May that “we are expecting to see them a little later in the year” — Matthew S. Lanigan, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-05-01 — a window that is now opening.

Scaling for the Next Phase

The second-quarter results demonstrate the operating leverage. Revenue grew 20% year-over-year to $82 million, with rental and service revenue hitting a record $54 million. Operating margins have climbed from negative territory during the fluid-systems era to 19.7% in Q2 2026, a 1.8 percentage point improvement year-over-year. The company raised its full-year EBITDA guidance to $97–103 million, implying 32% growth at the midpoint. And it's investing for the long haul: the manufacturing expansion project in Louisiana will increase production capacity by 50% by mid-2027, allowing NPKI to reduce reliance on cross-rented mats and further expand margins. With net debt of just $2 million, the balance sheet is pristine enough to fund this while remaining open to strategic acquisitions. As the high-voltage transmission buildout accelerates toward 2027–2028, the company is positioning itself to capture a disproportionate share of the matting demand, and the raised guidance is a clear vote of confidence in that trajectory.
