Penguin Solutions' Record Print — and the 35% Rush for the Exit
AI memory demand lifts the FY26 outlook to 22% growth, yet the stock peaks two days after the call and sheds a third of its value on cyclical and working-capital jitters.

The tape tells a different story than the transcript
Penguin Solutions closed fiscal Q3 (May 2026) with a number it had never printed: non-GAAP operating income of $64 million, up 67% year over year, and a raised full-year outlook that at the midpoint calls for 22% net sales growth and $2.60 of non-GAAP EPS — up from the 12% and $2.15 it flagged just three months earlier. Management even sketched a preliminary path for next year: “our preliminary fiscal 2027 view contemplates both total company net sales growth and non-GAAP EPS growth of approximately 30%” — Net sales by business segment were as follows · 2026-07-07. On paper this is a company in full acceleration. The market's verdict was the opposite. The stock peaked at $81.39 on July 9 — two days after the call — and has since fallen 35.3%. The 90-day tape shows a parabolic up-10w:+265% followed by a dn-6w:-15% unwind, the entire +172% two-year move now compressed into a single drawdown. This is a textbook sell-the-news reversal on a name that had tripled in a quarter. Why? Because the report's engine — memory — carries a cyclical and a balance-sheet bill, and the market is refusing to pay it.A business remade around Integrated Memory
The quarter was a structural milestone. “In Integrated Memory, Q3 net sales were $275 million representing 57% of total company net sales, up 111% year-over-year and 60% sequentially” — Net sales by business segment were as follows · 2026-07-07. Penguin is now, first, a memory company. Advanced Computing, last year's center of gravity, has become the diversified growth leg: the non-hyperscale AI infrastructure business grew 81% year over year and now represents 58% of the segment — up from 33% a year ago — with enterprise, sovereign AI and neocloud customers scaling. The AI factory platform is broadening exactly as the AI driven demand narrative predicts, and the company's KV Cache-driven MemoryAI and agentic AI positioning sits right on top of the market's own emerging KV Cache theme in the global trajectory. The engine that could stall: memory pricing
Management is candid that margin health is a function of pricing timing. “Q4 outlook assumes less pricing favorability than we experienced in Q3, and we therefore expect some downward pressure on gross margins as we exit the year” — Net sales by business segment were as follows · 2026-07-07. Gross margin fell 3.6 percentage points year over year to 28.1% in Q3, and the FY26 margin guide of 28.5% ± 0.5 points leans on fading memory pricing. The model constraint was laid out plainly a year earlier: “we generally operate in Memory on a value-add basis... as Memory prices increase, we can generally pass along those price increases, but we don't get additional margin from that” — Nate Olmstead, Chief Financial Officer · 2025-10-08. This quarter was different — pricing favorability padded it — but the durability question is real. That demand optimism is the bull case. The bear case is the liquidity tab. Receivables jumped to $704 million from $293 million a year ago; inventory to $498 million from $184 million; accounts payable to $736 million. Operating cash flow was a negative $75 million in the quarter. Receivables-to-revenue, which ran in the 40-60% range for years before this boom, spiked to 91% — the clearest sign the memory surge is absorbing balance-sheet liquidity. The company is "chasing materials" — “We're chasing materials. We're using the balance sheet to strategically purchase ahead where we can, but the demand is very strong in memory” — Nate Olmstead, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-04-01 — and the balance sheet is paying for it. Cash fell $49 million sequentially to $440 million even after $40 million from an equity stake sale. Free cash flow has been violently volatile as memory inventory eats liquidity — two quarters back it printed −$81M, the quarter before that +$81M, and the latest trailing quarter is down 18% year over year. The operating leverage, though, is real before the drag: Operating income reached $53M in the last filed quarter (+186% yoy) with operating margin vaulting 10.4 points — the mix shift to memory is converting to profit even as it consumes cash. The demand continues to increase. So while the prices are going up, and it may stabilize at some point, we see increased demand.
