Theodore Geisler, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04
Pinnacle West Capital (PNW) is at the heart of an economic transformation that few regulated utilities can match. Arizona's semiconductor and data center boom is driving record electricity demand, and the company's Q2 2026 earnings call laid out a growth supercycle that is only beginning.

A Demand Landscape Unlike Any Other

The numbers are staggering. CFO Andrew Cooper reported “We achieved 2.1% customer growth and weather-normalized sales growth of 9.6% compared with the second quarter of last year.” — Andrew Cooper, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-08-04 This comes against a backdrop of load growth that has consistently exceeded guidance. The uncommitted queue now approaches 20 gigawatts, while committed load stands at 4.5 gigawatts — a pipeline that extends well into the next decade. Revenue reached $1.1 billion, up 11% year-over-year, illustrating the earnings power of this expansion. CEO Ted Geisler emphasized the breadth of growth: "The momentum and exceptional growth we're seeing across our state underscore just how important this work is." The TSMC announcement — a $100 billion incremental investment — was the marquee event, and Geisler noted its ripple effects: “Nearly 20,000 acres of surrounding land are now in various stages of planning and development, giving rise to an entirely new economic corridor in the region.” — Theodore Geisler, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04 This is not just a story of data centers. The gas generation conversion at Cholla is a key strategic move to meet baseload needs. Geisler explained: "By repurposing existing infrastructure and transmission assets, we're able to reliably serve growing demand while maximizing the affordable value of assets already in place."

Regulatory Progress and the Cholla Pivot

The company is deep in a pivotal rate case, having concluded 31 days of hearings. Geisler noted the importance of establishing a sustainable cost recovery framework: "We have very strong evidence on the record for supporting our positions, supporting the need to be able to address regulatory lag and come up with a sustainable cost recovery framework going forward." The outcome will shape how PNW funds its massive capital plan, which includes the Cholla conversion and significant transmission investments. The prior quarter, he had emphasized the IRP's role: “The IRP will be a meaningful update.” — Theodore N. Geisler, Chairman, President and CEO · 2026-05-04 That update is now scheduled for October, with the full ramp schedule of committed customers to be included.

Water and Reliability: The Long View

Despite the drought conditions on the Colorado River, PNW remains insulated operationally. Geisler stated: “We don't anticipate any operational impact at all as a result of the negotiations on Colorado River allocation.” — Theodore Geisler, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-04 Palo Verde's use of 100% recycled wastewater is a key advantage. The system reliability achieved during record summer peak demand of 9,164 MW is a testament to disciplined planning. The company's subscription model for large customers remains a differentiator, allowing growth to pay for growth. While still in negotiations, Geisler reiterated its importance: "We continue to be in active negotiations with counterparties on various projects." This aligns with prior commentary from November 2025: “The pipeline is expected to be in service in 2029.” — Theodore Geisler, Chairman, President and CEO · 2025-11-03
