PubMatic's Agentic Inflection: From DSP Hangover to Double-Digit Growth

The SSP returned to double-digit revenue growth ahead of schedule on the back of agentic execution — and the stock is already voting with a 94% 90-day rip.

The Inflection Trade

After a year in the wilderness, PubMatic has found its footing — and the tape is paying attention. The stock, still roughly 76% below its 2021 IPO peak on the full history, ripped +94% over the 90 days through late August (up-17w:+94%), a near-binary bet that the worst is over. CEO Rajeev Goel framed the quarter as the proof: “we returned to double-digit year-over-year revenue growth well ahead of schedule, and we expect that growth will accelerate through the second half of the year.” — Rajeev Goel, Co-Founder and CEO · 2026-08-06 That headline number masks a more subtle story. The quarter still carried the legacy DSP hangover — the platform shift by a top buyer in mid-2025 that compressed reported growth for four straight quarters. The origin was spelled out in August 2025: “Beginning in July, we saw a headwind emerge from a top DSP buyer, which recently shifted a significant number of clients to a new platform that evaluates inventory differently.” — Rajeev K. Goel, Co-Founder and CEO · 2025-08-12 While the Q1-2026 guide was still awkward — Steve flagged the timeline “We'll see the benefit of lapping it not really at the start of the quarter” — Steven Pantelick, CFO · 2026-05-08 — that lap is now complete. CFO Steve Pantelick quantified the result: “revenues grew 11% year over year, adjusted EBITDA increased 38% and free cash flow increased 47%” — Steven Pantelick, CFO · 2026-08-06, with adjusted EBITDA margin expanding to 25% from 20% a year ago. Asked directly whether the drag was done, management was unambiguous: “That is now fully behind us.” — Steven Pantelick, CFO · 2026-08-06

Agentic Execution: A New Decisioning Layer

The real engine of this inflection is agentic — and it is a genuinely company-unique theme, not sector boilerplate. PubMatic's own keyword trajectory for Q2 2026 is dominated by Decision Fabric, proprietary intelligence, and agentic execution — a sharp break from the prior four quarters, which were consumed by the DSP headwind and mid-market DSP diversification. AgenticOS, launched in January, scaled from 30 to 80+ campaigns in a single quarter, now touching all five global agency holding companies. Management argues this is not a product line — it is a re-architecture of where decisions get made, and a structural shift toward the sell-side. Rajeev put it starkly with Barton Crockett on the call:

the Agentic opportunity... comes with a shift in decisioning to the PubMatic platform... More of that end-to-end transaction between the publisher and the advertiser is being processed in our platform, including the decisioning, which means we're adding more value and we're participating in that value creation.

Rajeev Goel, Co-Founder and CEO · 2026-08-06
The second front is Decision Fabric — essentially containerization, letting DSPs run their proprietary models inside PubMatic's infrastructure. It is at launch stage with partners like MiQ and Chalice, but the strategic implication is large: it erodes the user-interface lock-in that has historically anchored buyers to the DSP layer.

competitive advantage will be determined not by traditional software user interfaces, but rather by AI-native infrastructure, proprietary intelligence, and the ability to consistently deliver superior outcomes.

Financial Leverage: The Mix Shift Is Working

The financial transformation is real and now visible. Approximately 60% of revenue now comes from CTV, mobile app and emerging revenue streams — double the share of three years ago, and those categories collectively grew ~40% YoY. premium inventory keeps expanding — the Sony Pictures partnership and live sports, which more than doubled YoY, plus World Cup-driven demand. Emerging revenues (a proxy for agentic and AI products) nearly doubled YoY to an all-time high of 15% of revenue. Even prediction markets got a shout-out, tied to live-sports adjacencies. The fundamentals paint the V: Total revenue fell from $73M in Q2-2025 to $63M by Q1-2026; the Q2 print of +11% YoY puts it near $79M — back at the peak. The leverage is even more visible in cash conversion: Free cash flow margin (ex-SBC) was 27.6% in Q1-2026, a level that exceeds what the revenue line alone would suggest. Even after the run-up, price-to-revenue remains un-demanding relative to history.

Leadership & What to Watch

This quarter also surfaced a leadership transition: CFO Steve Pantelick — 15 years in the role — announced his retirement, staying through Q1-2027, while new global CRO Megan Ramm joins in August. It is the second C-level change in a year and carries modest overhang risk despite management's calm framing. Consensus for the current quarter is a Q3 guide of $75–77M (+12% YoY at midpoint) and Q4 EBITDA margins similar to last year. The bigger optionality — intentionally excluded from guidance — is the Google antitrust remedies verdict, which management has repeatedly sized at $50–75M of incremental revenue per 1% of share. With the stock still ~76% below its peak, the agentic narrative gives PubMatic a credible second act — but whether it compounds depends on Decision Fabric moving from launch to production across the DSP ecosystem, and on the sell-side truly claiming the value chain the way Rajeev believes.
