Sea's Q2: a $1B Shopify-style EBITDA milestone, a two-game pivot, and AI moving into the credit engine

Strong 48% revenue growth plus a firmer Shopee profit target, transformer-based credit underwriting, and two big-IP games for Garena — all pointing to a deliberate step-up in ambition.
SE · Earnings Call · 2026-08-11

Sea Limited's second-quarter print was, by any measure, a continuation of a very good year: “Sea generated $7.8 billion in revenue, up 48% year-on-year, and over $917 million in adjusted EBITDA.” — Forrest Li, CEO · 2026-08-11 But look past the headline growth and the quarter is remarkable for what it signals about the next twelve months: a firmer Shopee profit target, an AI-flavored Monee risk engine, and a gaming portfolio that finally looks less like a one-game company.

Shopee: the billion-dollar EBITDA milestone

Shopee remained the growth engine — GMV up 28% year-on-year, an eighth consecutive quarter of sequential growth, new active buyer growth accelerating to more than 35% YoY, and advertising revenue up more than 70% with ad spend improving 90+ basis points of take rate. The headline, though, is the year-end goal:

With this solid momentum we are optimistic that Shopee will achieve the milestone of $1 billion in adjusted EBITDA for the full year.

Forrest Li, CEO · 2026-08-11

That is a meaningful escalation from the prior quarter's framing, when guidance was deliberately soft: “we expect a pretty good growth of 25% with the bottom line EBITDA, at least not worse than last year.” — Hou Tianyu, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-05-12 Now management puts a hard number on ambitions, which implies second-half EBITDA above first-half — a deliberate choice balancing growth and profit as Unit economics improve across the Shopee VIP program, logistics and fulfillment. CFO Tony Hou doubled down when pressed: “we shared our full year ambition of achieving $1 billion in adjusted EBITDA.” — Hou Tianyu, CFO · 2026-08-11

AI stops being a slide bullet

The most genuinely novel piece of Q2 is how concretely machine learning is now embedded in operating decisions. Shopee is rolling out a generative recommendation algorithm — the GR algorithm — that management says is delivering real conversion gains: “We are rolling out our new GR algorithm, generative algorithm for recommendation and search, which gives us a meaningful improvement on the conversion rate that we observed.” — Hou Tianyu, CFO · 2026-08-11 Meanwhile Monee's underwriting is being rebuilt around transformer architectures, a deliberate echo of today's LLMs:

Our latest risk models are pretrained on our broad set of behavioral and transactional data across our ecosystem using transformer architecture similar to those following today's large language models.

Forrest Li, CEO · 2026-08-11
The early payoff, per Forrest, is a ~10% uplift in loan approval rates at similar risk, plus a ~95% reduction in income-document review time.

This is consistent with a sector-wide turn toward AI in commerce — CART (Instacart) reported the same week on “adoption of AI shopping assistant” and Japan's Rakuten talked up its “AI Super Agent.” Sea is riding that shared wave, but its deployment — a transformer trained on its own behavioral data to price credit risk — is company-unique, and gives Monee a durable edge that its offline peers cannot easily replicate.

Garena builds a second act

Free Fire keeps printing: bookings up 15% YoY into its ninth year, still averaging over 100 million DAUs. But the genuinely new signal is the two announced titles. “Palworld Online is an open-world multiplayer survival adventure game developed and published by Garena... and Monster Hunter Outlanders is a survival hunting action game developed by Tencent based on Capcom's iconic franchise.” — Forrest Li, CEO · 2026-08-11 This is the direct sequel to the NARUTO pivot — “we are super excited and motivated by seeing the success of the collaboration with IP such as NARUTO. Actually, this year, we're going to extend that IP collaboration.” — Forrest Li, CEO · 2026-03-03 Both new titles target genres and regions beyond Free Fire's core, with Palworld getting global publishing and Monster Hunter launching where Garena is strongest. Management remains deliberately measured about near-term financials, but the portfolio message is clear.

Monee outgrows its nest

Monee's loan book hit $11.1B, up 52% YoY at a stable 1.0% 90-day NPL. The hidden story is diversification away from Shopee: off-Shopee SPayLater now exceeds 20% of the SPL portfolio (as high as 35% in some markets), and the standalone ShopeePay app is expanding — live in four Asian markets, Brazil next. Higher provisions are baked in as mix shifts to off-Shopee loans and Brazil's high-rate market, but management frames the mix as intentional, with stable NPLs per segment as the guardrail.

The through-line across the quarter: Sea is converting ecosystem scale into a moat — the balance between growth and profit is now a choice, not a constraint. The $1B Shopee EBITDA milestone, the transformer credit engine, and two IP-backed games are all signs the company is aiming higher for 2027.
