Strong First Half, but the Real Story Is the Pivot

TP ICAP delivered a robust first half, with group revenue up 8% to GBP 1.3 billion and adjusted EBIT up 9% to GBP 196 million. The company also announced an 8% higher interim dividend and a new GBP 30 million buyback. As Nicolas Breteau put it, “We have delivered a strong first half. Group revenue increased 8% to GBP 1.3 billion with an excellent performance from Global Broking and disciplined execution across the group.” — Nicolas Breteau, Group CEO · 2026-08-06 But the more consequential news is the acceleration of the transformation plan. CFO Robin Stewart noted, “We now expect to exceed our 2027 target a year ahead of schedule, delivering at least GBP 50 million in annualized savings by the end of this year.” — Robin Stewart, Group CFO · 2026-08-06 This is a clear signal that the company is shifting from pure cost discipline toward funding organic growth—a pivot that will define the next chapter.

Energy & Commodities: A Temporary Geopolitical Setback

The most notable weak spot was Energy & Commodities, where adjusted EBIT fell from GBP 27 million to GBP 12 million. The culprit was the Middle East conflict, which disrupted physical oil flows and hedging activity. This is not a company-specific issue; the global keyword Middle East conflict has surged across the market, and other reporters this week, such as ADNT, have cited the same drag. CEO Nicolas Breteau explained that March volumes spiked 134% on oil futures, but June volumes dropped a third year-on-year as the physical flow of oil was badly interrupted. He remains confident the business will recover: "Our recent investments will pay off in the future," he said in the Q&A. The division has added capabilities in agricultural products, freight derivatives, and nuclear fuel, and expanded in the UAE and Brazil—a sign of long-term positioning.

Growth Engines Beyond Broking

While Energy & Commodities struggled, Global Broking was a star, with revenue up 11% and adjusted EBIT up 22%, pushing margins to 20.3%. The launch of RealQ and the acquisition of Vantage Capital Markets bolster the Asia Pacific and credit franchises. Parameta Solutions also grew 6% with a 35.3% adjusted EBIT margin, and Q2 margin improved as new sales hires began to contribute. The company is clearly building multiple engines: as Breteau said, “Well, I think we have multiple growth engines across the business. So we think that all divisions will contribute to this growth of revenue, but also delivering more operating leverage.” — Nicolas Breteau, Group CEO · 2026-08-06 This diversification is a deliberate strategy to reduce reliance on any single market or asset class.

Cash Flow and Capital Management

One item that might raise eyebrows is the operating cash outflow of GBP 77 million, but the CFO was quick to point out that 70% is due to a change in net settlement balances that reversed immediately after the period end. Underlying cash flow from operations was around GBP 100 million. Net cash stands at GBP 652 million, ample to fund the buyback and future acquisitions. The company is also reallocating certain agency and digital asset activities between divisions, a structural move that will be detailed at Q3. As Stewart summarized,

As a result of simplifying our business, improving efficiency and unlocking cash from the balance sheet, we are announcing another share buyback today.

Outlook: Confidence in the Medium Term

Looking ahead, the company reaffirmed its 2026 outlook and laid out a medium-term ambition for mid- to high single-digit revenue growth. This is supported by the track record of 5% revenue CAGR since 2021 and 9% EBIT CAGR. The key change is the willingness to invest in growth now that the balance sheet is leaner and efficiency gains are flowing through. The stock may not be in the headlines today, but this earnings call shows a company that has finished the heavy lifting of transformation and is now ready to reap the rewards. It is a quiet, yet meaningful, inflection point.
