Alpha Teknova: The Quiet Reagent Supplier Cashing In on AI's Wet-Lab Boom

Q1 revenue inflects to a 3-year high with Clinical Solutions +85% — and management is now pointing at AI data generation as a fresh reagent demand tailwind into 2027.

Q1: The Inflection Finally Shows in the Numbers

Alpha Teknova started 2026 with a quarter that finally looks like the beginning of the story investors have been waiting for. Total revenue rose 13% year-over-year to $11 million — “the first Q1 in which we earned over $11 million in revenue in nearly three years.” — Matthew C. Lowell, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-05-06 The composition matters as much as the headline: Clinical Solutions jumped 85% to $2.1 million, and management was explicit that this was broad, not a one-off.

Is this just a lumpy quarter, or is this more broad-based? In this case, it is more broad-based.

Stephen Gunstream, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-05-06
Better still, gross margin expanded 3.5 points to 34.2%, and the CFO framed it around the high-fixed-cost operating leverage that has been the bull case all along. The fundamentals back this reading. Total revenue has climbed back to its pandemic-era peak, with 13% YoY growth in Q1 2026. And Gross margin has recovered from the low-teens trough of late 2023 back into the mid-30s.

The New Tailwind Nobody Ordered: AI Reagents

The genuinely fresh signal on this call was the link between AI compute and wet-lab reagents. Asked about AI-driven wet-lab spending, CEO Stephen Gunstream didn't wave it off. He called out that AI data generation programs are reagent-hungry, and that Teknova's standard catalog products could benefit:

I think these AI data generation programs are significant, and it is lots of reagents. They are generating significant amounts of data... the standard products we offer in our catalog, products like LB broth for bacteria, or the buffers and things to purify proteins, I would expect that to be a tailwind for us.

Management is careful to say it is "not yet significant or material," but the framing is new for a company that has spent two years describing market stabilization. It aligns Teknova with the global AI data centers theme that has dominated market action — except here the angle isn't power and GPUs, it's the consumable reagents that feed AI model validation and data generation. For a ~$198M market-cap specialty manufacturer, this is a differentiated entry point into the AI story.

The 2027 Bridge: Funding, Funnel, and Follow-On

The quarter also reinforced the medium-term math. Management reiterated 2026 guidance of $42–44M (implying ~6% growth at the midpoint) but pointed to ~20% growth in 2027, on a familiar pathway: biotech funding is running "two quarters ahead," and history says customer spend follows by three to four quarters. This echoes what the company said in February — “we were able to track that particular segment to be about a 4-quarter lag on the way up” — Stephen Gunstream, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-02-26 — and the CFO's November framing of a diversified book: “75% of our business is growing double digits.” — Stephen Gunstream, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2025-11-07 What's changed is confidence. The company now supports ~70 therapies, with five in Phase 2/3 nearing completion and 12 in Phase 1. The large pharma growth called out in Q1, plus the commercial readiness of that late-stage pipeline, is the bridge to 20% growth. The market appears to believe it: the stock has rallied +161% over the last 90 days, a sharp reversal from a -73.7% drawdown off its 2021 peak. Price-to-revenue has recovered to 3.7x from a low near 1.6x, though still far below the 20x peak. The caveat is execution and cash. Free cash outflow was still $3.6M in Q1, and the company needs to reach roughly $52–57M in annualized revenue before adjusted EBITDA turns positive. The customer engagement and funnel-health metrics management keeps pointing to are the leading indicators worth watching — if they translate to orders, the 2027 target moves from aspiration to plan. For now, the story is simple: a high-leverage reagent maker finally feeding off both the biotech recovery and the AI compute buildout.
