Trivago Built an App With AI. Its Growth Still Comes From TV.

The travel metasearch site is selling an AI-native operating model, but Q3's 16% revenue growth and €45M 2027 EBITDA target still rest on brand ads, members, and CRM.
TRVG · Earnings Call · 2026-11-04

The beat is real. The AI story is not why.

Trivago's Q3 2026 was a good old-fashioned brand-marketing quarter dressed in AI language. Total revenue reached €192.5 million, up 16% year over year, the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, and adjusted EBITDA hit €18.7 million—the highest since Johannes Thomas and his team returned in mid-2023. “In the third quarter, total revenue reached €192.5 million, representing year over year growth of 16%.” — Wolf Schmuhl, CFO · 2026-11-04 The CFO also said the quiet part out loud: “We continue to believe that our current share price understates trivago's long term earnings potential.” — Wolf Schmuhl, CFO · 2026-11-04 That is why the buyback continues. Geographically, Americas and Developed Europe each grew referral revenue 15%, while Rest of World fell 10% on roughly 4% FX headwinds and the Middle East conflict. Rest of World is only 17% of total referral revenue, so the company can absorb it. But the growth was bought: selling and marketing rose €17.3 million, with Americas core ad spend up 23% and Developed Europe up 16%. Global return on ad spend held at 133.2% versus 134.1%, but Americas ROAS fell to 129% from 135.4%. Management framed that as leaning into favorable elasticity, not deteriorating economics. The full-year guide is unchanged—mid-teens revenue growth and around €30 million adjusted EBITDA—while 2027 is guided to about €45 million and the 10% margin target stays at 2028.

AI wrote the app; customers still haven't arrived through it

The prepared remarks are an AI flex. Thomas said 93% of employees use AI daily and 86% report a measurable difference; AI now writes more than 80% of code in key repositories; output per developer rose 44% in six months; and each developer shipped 60% more code changes in September than a year earlier. The showpiece is the unified iOS/Android rebuild.

We took a fully AI driven approach and AI wrote nearly 100% of the new code base. Under traditional engineering conditions, we estimate this would have taken 12 to 18 months. Our team completed the rebuild in 4 months, and needed 2 more months to qualify it in production.

Johannes Thomas, CEO and Managing Director · 2026-11-04
The ambition is even blunter: “Our ambition remains for our roughly 600 core talent to operate with the impact of 6 thousand.” — Johannes Thomas, CEO and Managing Director · 2026-11-04 That is a company-unique claim, not sector boilerplate. But the revenue proof is thin. Asked about agentic channels, Thomas said AI referral revenue is “significantly below 1% in referral revenue” — Johannes Thomas, CEO and Managing Director · 2026-11-04. It had plateaued or declined in Q1 and Q2, stepped up in Q3, but remains immaterial. Trivago is collaborating with every major AI lab, has joined OpenAI's paid ads program, rebuilt its own AI search, and uses Book and Go to make hotels bookable through agents. That is a sensible distribution hedge. It is not yet a growth engine. The Google DMA changes are similar: Thomas sees a more level playing field but “there are no major impacts on the business” — Johannes Thomas, CEO and Managing Director · 2026-11-04. AI is currently an internal productivity and defensive moat story, not a demand story.

What management stopped talking about

The prior calls leaned heavily on Book & Go, the CPA model, and Property Details Pages. This quarter, Book & Go still gets a mention—more than doubled share, top-five marketplace player—but the 10-20% user-penetration framing is gone. In August, Thomas said: “we maybe see 10-20% of our users in the future using Book and Go.” — Johannes Thomas, CEO and Managing Director · 2026-08-05 That is now absent from the Q&A. The keyword trail confirms the rotation: Property Details Pages and Book & Go drop out of the top-30 company keywords, replaced by member to CRM, context windows, AI labs, and agents. The marketplace rebalancing is mature—all other advertisers are 35% of referral revenue, up from 26%, and logged-in members generate more than 35% before intersegment eliminations. CRM is the new profit lever. Thomas had promised this in May: “it will start to become meaningful for our bottom line very soon” — Johannes Thomas, CEO and Managing Director · 2026-05-06. Now he says CRM revenue grew at a high pace again and is becoming a relevant profit contributor. That is follow-through, and it matters more than another AI demo.

The micro-cap math

At a roughly $248 million market cap, with €139.9 million of cash and short-term investments and no long-term debt, trivago is priced as if the flywheel might stall. The bull case is simple: if 2027 EBITDA reaches €45 million and the company gets to a 10% margin by 2028, the cash-adjusted equity is cheap, and buybacks compound it. The bear case is equally simple: growth is still dependent on brand spend, AI referral traffic is under 1%, Rest of World is a drag, and Q4 faces a tough comparison. The quarter started in line, but the margin story depends on marketing cost leverage arriving before the next brand-spend step-up. Trivago has built a credible brand-to-member-to-CRM flywheel. The AI coding claims are impressive. But the market will not pay for "600 people acting like 6,000" until it sees it in conversion, retention, and cash—not just in lines of code.
