Amid a weaker H1, Sembcorp completes its biggest acquisition, raises the dividend, and bets big on data centers.

A Pivotal Quarter for Sembcorp

Sembcorp Industries reported a mixed first half of 2026: underlying net profit fell 25% to SGD 369 million, but the completion of the Alinta Energy acquisition in June and a raised interim dividend signal a strategic pivot that goes beyond this quarter's numbers. The company is clearly positioning itself for the AI and data center boom, and its language reflects a confidence that the second half will be 'meaningfully higher' than the first.

Alinta: A Game-Changing Acquisition

The acquisition of Alinta, closed on 11 June, is the headline event. Management emphasized that on a pro forma basis, the group's underlying net profit would have been SGD 558 million, with ROE at 19.1% — a dramatic uplift from the reported 13% ROE. This acquisition is not just about scale; it diversifies earnings across geographies and adds a high-quality integrated energy platform in Australia. CEO Kim Yin Wong noted, "The acquisition of Alinta broadens Sembcorp's earnings base and increases the contribution from integrated platforms with recurring cash flows." The market's positive reaction is evident in the management's decision to increase the interim dividend by 22% to SGD 0.11 per share — a clear signal that they believe the cash flows are sustainable.

Riding the Data Center Wave

A central theme of the call was the 'tsunami' of AI and data center demand. Kim Yin Wong highlighted, "I would like to touch on this growing wave, and some people call tsunami, of AI and data center demand." Sembcorp is already a trusted partner with over 1 GW of power purchase agreements in Singapore, and the recent arrangement between Senoko and Micron for a direct connection infrastructure is a significant step. The company is also repositioning its Wilton site in the UK to become a powered-land platform for data centers, with 200 MW under planning and potential for 280 MW by 2028. This aligns with the broader market narrative — we see data centers as a recurring theme in the latest earnings calls across the globe. Sembcorp's integrated energy portfolio, including its Spark spread optimization and low-cost gas supply, positions it well to capture this demand.

Renewables and Capital Recycling

The Renewables segment face a challenging half, with profits down 48% to SGD 69 million, impacted by weak wind resources, curtailment, and the removal of VAT refunds in China. Yet management remains focused on high-margin opportunities, particularly in India, where there are 3.6 GW of projects with high tariffs in the pipeline. CFO Eugene Cheng mentioned the potential for capital recycling across the portfolio, including the IPO of India renewables, which is being 'gearing up' as market conditions improve. This is a critical strategic lever to fund growth while deleveraging. The company's ability to recycle capital from mature assets into new opportunities is a core part of its strategy.

Dividend Increase and Shareholder Returns

The dividend increase from SGD 0.09 to SGD 0.11 is a clear message to investors. Kim Yin Wong stated, "We are committed to increasing our payout ratio. The only thing I fall short of saying is to tell you what is the target." This, combined with the strong cash flow generation and a deleveraging trajectory, suggests management is confident about the future. The market's response has been positive, with the stock trading at a premium to its peers.

So in line with our outlook for the full year, we are pleased to increase the interim dividend to SGD 0.11 per share, up from SGD 0.09 a year ago.

Sembcorp is clearly pivoting towards a future where acquisition of Alinta provides a solid foundation, and the push into data centers and AI-related power demand is a strategic cornerstone. The company's focus on payout ratio and capital recycling underscores a disciplined approach to capital allocation. While the first half was weak, the outlook is promising, with July showing strong spark spreads and a positive trajectory for the remainder of the year. This is a company in transition, and the market is taking notice.
