Veru Stacks the Catalyst Deck: Patent, Novo Nordisk Supply Pact, and a Fully Enrolled PLATEAU Trial

The biotech's obesity-combination thesis gains IP protection and a big-pharma endorsement, but cash runway and near-term data will decide the next leg.
VERU · Earnings Call · 2026-08-10

Veru Inc. (VERU) — a micro-cap biotech trading at a fraction of its 2022 peak — used its Q3 FY2026 earnings call to pile up three derisking events around its lead asset, enobosarm. The company now has a fully enrolled Phase IIb PLATEAU study, a notice of allowance for a key method-of-use patent, and an unpaid clinical-supply agreement with Novo Nordisk for Wegovy. Together, they form a coherent near-term catalyst sequence that the market has not yet fully priced in, given the stock’s +10.9% 90-day bounce still sits 37.6% below its recent $4.23 high.

Catalyst Stacked: Patent, Partnership, and a Fully Enrolled Pivotal Trial

The headline is PLATEAU study enrollment: 239 patients, all in, with a 32-week interim analysis expected in Q1 2027 and final data in Q4 2027. “We recently announced we have completed full enrollment of the Phase IIb PLATEAU clinical trial with 239 patients enrolled.” — Mitchell Steiner, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-10 That puts a definitive, dated catalyst on the calendar — something investors in this beaten-down name have lacked.

Equally important is the IP barrel. The company received a U.S. patent application notice of allowance covering methods of use for enobosarm dosed with semaglutide or after discontinuation, with claims sweeping preservation of lean mass, fat-mass reduction, physical function, insulin resistance, HbA1c, and prevention of weight rebound — protection out to at least October 2044. Management called it a “big deal,” and the patent strategic value is hard to overstate. “I think the patent is one of many things that happened this quarter that we should pay attention to and take notice.” — Mitchell Steiner, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-10

Novo Nordisk’s role is the third piece: a weight loss drugs supply agreement that provides Wegovy at no cost for the trial, plus a right of first negotiation on any future combination with a Novo GLP-1 product. That effectively creates an industry validation channel into the very company whose drug is being studied.

Why the GLP-1 Combination Space Plays to Veru’s Strengths

The scientific narrative is now sharper than it was a year ago. At the December 2025 call, management admitted the GLP-1 partner choice was unresolved: “We're in the process of chatting and trying to secure one or the other.” — Mitchell Steiner, Chief Executive Officer · 2025-12-17 Today, semaglutide is locked in, and the weight-loss plateau — the 88% of patients who stop losing weight on GLP-1 monotherapy — has become the target. The design is built around sarcopenic obesity, measuring total body weight, lean mass, physical function (stair climb), and bone mineral density. That’s a differentiated end-point set versus the myostatin-inhibitor crowd, which has struggled to show functional benefit.

CEO Mitchell Steiner argued the field is moving toward Veru’s thesis:

So a lot of things happening to take notice, and we're ahead of the pack at this point. And we're highly focused on what is that commercial population that we need to understand the best benefit initially for enobosarm in combination with the GLP-1.

Mitchell Steiner, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-08-10
Enobosarm remains an oral small molecule, whereas most competitors’ muscle-preservation candidates are injectable biologics. If the incremental weight loss bar of ≥5% is met at 68 weeks, the FDA could accept it as a primary endpoint, with physical function and bone as meaningful secondaries. If not, Veru has a functional-endpoint path — a rare optionality.

Fundamentals and the Long Odds

All of this sits atop a delicate balance sheet. The company ended Q3 with $23.9M cash and restricted cash, but cash runway at 3.1 quarters. CFO Michele Greco was explicit that funding covers the interim analysis, not the full study. Operating burn is modest — R&D spending was $3M last quarter, down 20% YoY, and net loss improved to $-3M. But valuation is thin: market cap under $35M, with the stock down 94% over its full history and still far from recovery.

The broader market context amplifies the risk. Global earnings transcripts are saturated with GLP-1 and weight loss keywords — this is one of the hottest themes in biotech, but also one of the most crowded. Veru’s niche — Enobosarm in combination with GLP-1s — is unique, but the trial could still lack the statistical power to hit the 5% delta. Prior calls have focused on the same risk: at the May 2026 call, management acknowledged the binary nature of the FDA gate: “So the first question is basically, if we're successful, was the next step and you go to a Phase III.” — Mitchell Steiner, CEO · 2026-05-13 The interim analysis in Q1 2027 will be the first real test of whether the plateau theory holds.

For now, the story is a high-risk, high-reward binary with a fully enrolled trial, fresh patent protection, and a strategic partnership. The next three months will decide whether this tiny biotech finally earns a rerating — or joins the long list of obesity-combination also-rans.
