5N Plus: Record Bookings, Record Revenue—and a Margin Bill Coming Due

A 30% top-line quarter converted into 7% EBITDA growth, as management trades incremental capacity for a much larger, uncontracted bet on European space solar
VNP.TO · Earnings Call · 2026-11-03

A record quarter with a margin asterisk

5N Plus did not just deliver a strong quarter; it changed the scale of the story. Q3 revenue rose 30% to $136.4 million, Specialty Semiconductors printed a record $100.7 million, and adjusted EBITDA reached $31.1 million. But adjusted EBITDA grew only 7%, and net earnings fell to $12.3 million from $18.2 million. That gap is the signal. “Revenue for Q3 increased 30% to $136.4 million compared with Q3 25.” — Alban Fournier, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-11-03 The volume recovery was genuine — “most of the game came from increased deliveries” — Alban Fournier, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-11-03 after Q2's operational inefficiencies, with the remediation actions contributing only a smaller slice. Adjusted gross margin rose sequentially to 31.4%, but the mix is less rich: Performance Materials normalized, and higher metal input costs are still working through contracts. This is a growth company with a cost pass-through lag, not a pure pricing story. Note that adjusted gross margin as a percentage of revenue is now management's single most-repeated phrase — the market has trained itself to watch the ratio, not the dollars. The strategic news flow is what makes this quarter more than a volume print. 5N won a $7.3 million U.S. government award to establish gallium arsenide production for defense applications at St. George, Utah, and plans to expand that site by roughly 50%. AZUR's 25% space solar capacity increase for 2026 is ramping as planned. And the company is building toward roughly 20 tons of germanium-based metal capacity through recycling and refining complex feeds — a Germanium vertical-integration play that could broaden both defense and space supply relevance. Management also called out record bookings, with Richard Perron saying “there is a lot more to come, from a booking and backlog perspective.” — Richard Perron, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-11-03 That is not boilerplate; it is a claim about the pipeline, not just the quarter.

The capacity decision is no longer incremental

For several years 5N has added 25% to 35% of space solar capacity annually. This call suggests that cadence may not be enough. With European constellation programs moving toward execution and launches planned for 2029–2031, Perron said 5N is evaluating scenarios that could be "much more drastic" than recent annual additions. The language is unusually expansive for a company that has historically tied capacity to signed contracts:

Look, those opportunities in Europe and the continued growth in North America, altogether, it has the potential to drastically change our AZUR Space operations for the years 2029, 2030, and 2031. that is how big those opportunities are and the growth currently in the satellite industry.

Richard Perron, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-11-03
That is the central tension. The opportunity is real but not yet contracted capacity. Management reiterated that any expansion will be planned methodically and aligned with anticipated or contracted demand — yet capex is expected to increase substantially from next year, funded by a mix of balance-sheet debt and customer contributions. The germanium build is also multi-year: full capacity is roughly a year to a year and a half away, and Perron was candid that the metal will not be a bottleneck — “there could be, like, even more germanium than actually required” — Richard Perron, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-11-03 once new primary extraction comes online. Investors are being asked to underwrite a larger, more capital-intensive 5N Plus before the European awards are formally in hand.

What the tape is saying — and what management stopped saying

The public-market tape is not confirming the space enthusiasm. Over the last 90 days, low Earth orbit names are down roughly a quarter, space domain awareness is down a similar amount, and U.S. Space Force-linked equities have also sold off. The broader AI hardware complex is under pressure too, with AI data center one of the worst 30-day clusters in the global tape. 5N is not an AI data center supplier, but it is exposed to the same risk appetite that has punished space-themed equities. There is a subtler signal in the company's own keyword history. Last quarter, data centers — specifically space-based data centers — appeared in 5N's top thematic list; on this call management did not promote the idea at all. Instead the narrative shifted toward Defense, germanium refining, and the competitor GMP issue. That drop matters. Space data centers were always a long-dated option; 5N is now steering investors toward nearer-term, contracted demand. It is the right discipline, but it removes a speculative hook that may have attracted momentum money.

The guidance tightrope and the GMP wildcard

Guidance is solid but not aggressive. Management expects the high end of the $100–105 million adjusted EBITDA range, implying Q4 EBITDA of roughly $18.2 million — essentially flat versus the prior-year Q4. The company reiterated that Q4 is seasonally softer and that second-half gross margin should land around the Q2 level of 30.3%, plus or minus a percentage point. Performance Materials margin normalization is playing out as expected, while pass-throughs for higher input costs should be substantially completed around mid-2027. That is consistent with the prior call's warning: “The metal pass-through, we expect it to happen with at least 2 quarter lags and in a partial way, it won't be 100%.” — Alban Fournier, Executive Team Member · 2026-08-04 Margin recovery is a 2027 story, not a Q4 catalyst. The wildcard is competitive. Management noted that its closest competitor in pharma and health bismuth products lost GMP certification: “our nearest competitor for pharma and health products lost its GMP certification.” — Richard Perron, President and Chief Executive Officer · 2026-11-03 Because Q4 and Q1 are annual contract renewal periods for Performance Materials, that could become a volume and share tailwind. Management wisely refused to quantify it, but it is a free option not embedded in guidance. The prior call had already described the operational stretch behind the volume ramp — “pushing every equipment we have close to its limit” — Richard Perron, President and CEO · 2026-08-04 — which makes the Q3 recovery more than seasonal, but also explains why the company is expanding St. George and AZUR rather than simply sweating existing assets. Watch Medical Imaging as the quiet third leg: Perron flagged it as a two-year contributor, not a 2027 revenue line. 5N Plus is a genuine name in motion: record bookings, a new defense award, germanium integration, and a potential step-change in space solar capacity. But the quarter also shows the cost of that growth — 30% revenue growth converted into only 7% adjusted EBITDA growth, with net earnings down year over year. The next catalyst is not Q4; it is whether management converts the European pipeline into signed contracts before committing to a far larger capacity build.
