Record AUM, a 900bps margin milestone — and a quiet pivot toward buybacks while tokenization momentum cools

WisdomTree caps six record quarters with a 42.6% adjusted margin, yet GAAP net income is negative and the CEO is betting the valuation gap closes on an on-chain platform the keyword tape isn't confirming.

A milestone quarter collides with a GAAP caveat

The headline is unambiguously strong. AUM hit a record $162.9B — the sixth consecutive record — with $3.1B of net inflows in the quarter and $9B year-to-date, a 13% annualized organic growth rate. June added Atlantic House (closed May 1, ~$4B AUM) and pushed the adjusted operating margin to 42.6% for Q2 and 41.1% year-to-date. “Operating leverage in our business model together with our recent acquisitions resulted in a year-to-date adjusted operating margin of 41.1%, an expansion of 900 basis points compared to the prior-year period.” — Bryan Joseph Edmiston, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-07-31 Management framed this as the payoff of a multi-year build — "Surpassing a 40% operating margin marks an important milestone and underscores the scalability of our operating model." Yet the GAAP underneath is less pretty. The latest 10-Q shows net income of −$23M (−194% yoy) on revenue that rose to $159M (+48% yoy), and liabilities-to-assets climbed 14 percentage points to 73.4% — even as the firm retired $127M face of convertible notes. The adjusted-vs-GAAP split is the real story: record flows and a 40%+ margin on an adjusted basis, a loss on a GAAP basis.

The pivot: buying back stock while talking up an "unrecognized" platform

The most genuinely new keyword this quarter isn't a product — it's share growth (rank 1), alongside "open market share" and "structuring fees." WisdomTree commenced open-market repurchases for the first time, ~1.7M shares (~$29M) through the call, “we repurchased $29 million of our stock at an average price of $17.40” — Jonathan Laurence Steinberg, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-07-31 — a stock that has since rallied ~48% in the trailing 90 days and now trades near its multi-year peak. The buyback is a subtle but real strategic shift: an asset manager whose pitch has been organic growth and tokenization optionality now adds a capital-returns lever, tightening diluted share-count guidance to 152–155M and reallocating interest earnings to fund repurchases. The valuation-gap thesis is now front and center.

If WisdomTree were simply a global ETF franchise, with industry-leading organic growth, expanding operating margins, and consistent earnings per share growth, we believe it should command a meaningfully higher valuation than where our shares trade today.

At 4.1x trailing revenue (+36% yoy), the market is starting to pay up, but the CEO insists the tokenization business is still "largely unrecognized."

Tokenization: conviction rising as keyword momentum falls

Here is the sharpest divergence in the report. The prepared remarks leaned hardest on tokenization — the 24/7 real-time mismatch, the Broadridge survey (85% of asset managers saying it's strategically important), and the tokenized ETF filing — plus renewed Clarity Act optimism.

Modern markets increasingly operate in real time 24/7, 365 days a year, while most traditional financial infrastructure still depends on business hours, batch processing, and multi-day settlement. That is the mismatch. And that is what tokenization solves.

Jonathan Laurence Steinberg, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-07-31
Yet the company's own momentum data shows tokenized money market fund collapsing −180 this quarter and "WTGXX" −167 — while global AI data centers sit among the tape's 30-day decliners (−8.6%, 50 negative names). The digital-asset AUM wobbled with outflows; as Will Peck conceded, “AUM goes up and down.” — William Peck, Head of Digital Assets or similar role related to digital assets · 2026-07-31 A year ago the CEO predicted “over the next 3 years, our tokenized money market fund isn't the largest fund within WisdomTree's Empire.” — Jonathan Steinberg, CEO · 2026-01-30 This quarter the rhetoric is unchanged but the metric is stalling. The counterweight is farmland. Jono foreshadowed last spring, “you will see, I believe, in very farmland in ETFs… the 40 Act does allow for up to 15% of assets in illiquid assets” — Jonathan Steinberg, CEO · 2026-05-01 — and now the Ceres land is increasingly pitched as Data centers and "demand for compute" optionality, a longer-dated, community-sensitive story ("these things are not overnight"). The opportunity set narrative rests on two pillars — tokenized rails and farmland-into-data-center optionality — neither of which has yet shown up durably in the flows, even as the stock has already re-rated sharply.
