Q2 Results and the Propel Announcement

Willis Towers Watson ended the second quarter with a bang. Revenue grew 5% organically, adjusted operating margin expanded 100 basis points to 19.5%, and adjusted diluted EPS rose 17% to $3.35. Yet the bigger story was the company's decision to double down on artificial intelligence with a multi-year acceleration program called Propel. CEO Carl Hess described it as "an acceleration of technology adoption already underway across the company." “In the second quarter, we delivered strong results with 5% organic growth, 100 basis points of adjusted operating margin expansion and $3.35 of adjusted diluted earnings per share, up 17% over the prior year.” — Carl A. Hess, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-07-30 The plan commits $625 million in cash costs to generate approximately $400 million in run rate savings, with $350 million netting to the bottom line after reinvestment. CFO Andrew Krasner explained: “We expect to generate approximately $400 million in run rate savings ... ultimately delivering $350 million in net run rate savings by the end of 2028.” — Andrew Krasner, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-07-30 The result, management targets, is an adjusted operating margin of approximately 30% by 2028, up from the 19.5% delivered in Q2 2026 and the 18.6% GAAP margin recorded in Q1 2026. The margin expansion will be led by automation of routine work, a simplified operating model, lower third-party spend, and retirement of legacy technology.

A Step Change from Prior AI Investments

This is not WTW's first foray into AI. Over the past eighteen months, the company has invested in tools from the Newfront acquisition, launched the Neuron platform, and embedded AI across businesses. In the first-quarter call, CFO Andrew Krasner noted, “We're already capturing AI-driven efficiencies. They contributed to the margin expansion we delivered in 2025 and the forward trajectory that we've committed to across both of our segments.” — Andrew Krasner, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-04-30 What makes Propel different is its scale and explicit financial targets. The company is betting that AI can fundamentally change the economics of insurance broking and consulting, not just improve productivity.

Propel is an acceleration of what's already working for WTW. Our second quarter shows our strategy is working and Propel is designed to capitalize on that momentum.

Carl A. Hess, Chief Executive Officer · 2026-07-30
The plan builds on existing successes. In Risk & Broking, the Neuron platform has reduced scheduled insurance generation from four hours to five minutes, and real estate premium allocations from two to four weeks to minutes. In Health, Wealth & Career, the Rewards AI tool now serves more than 5,000 client users, and the Violet Suite has increased benefit decision support by 52% while cutting participant follow-ups by 60%. These examples were cited on the call to illustrate the potential.

Financial Backdrop and Market Reaction

The market has responded favorably. The stock has risen 22% over the last 90 days, and the full-history trend shows a strong upward trajectory after a brief drawdown. Total revenue reached $2.4 billion in Q1 2026, up 9% year-over-year, and the company expects to deliver mid-single-digit organic growth for 2026. The company remains committed to returning at least $1 billion in share repurchases this year, and Propel does not alter that commitment. The program is expected to meaningfully boost free cash flow once upfront costs subside in 2029.

Implications and Risks

Propel is a bold bet that AI can drive durable competitive advantage in a sector where human advice and relationships have historically been paramount. The company is redirecting capacity away from routine tasks toward client-facing, judgment-based work, as Lucy Clarke explained: “It takes out that manual grind and the guys can put that time back into advice, relationships and winning new business.” — Lucy Clarke, President, Risk & Broking · 2026-07-30 That echoes a theme from the first-quarter call, where Neuron's benefits were already being highlighted: “This enables our users to do all their work from a single screen with no data entry.” — Lucy Clarke, Head of Risk & Broking · 2026-04-30 The execution risk is real, but the skepticism has been partially priced in given the stock's recent rally. With a plan that couples aggressive cost-cutting with reinvestment in growth, WTW is positioning itself as a leader in AI-enabled advisory services — a move that could redefine how insurance broking firms are valued.
