Zscaler's AI Security Acceleration Becomes the Engine

Record net new ARR, rising AI security bookings, and a forthcoming Agentic SecOps launch set the stage for fiscal 2027.
ZS · Earnings Call · 2026-09-03
Zscaler delivered a strong finish to fiscal 2026, but the more interesting story is how the quarter's metrics signal a decisive shift in the company's growth story. “We delivered a strong finish to the fiscal year with 25% ARR growth and a non-GAAP operating margin of 24%. We are seeing significant positive trends in net new ARR with growth, excluding Red Canary, accelerating to 17% in Q4.” — Jagtar Chaudhry, Chairman and CEO · 2026-09-03 That acceleration from 10% in the first half to 17% in Q4, alongside a record number of $1M+ ACV deals, suggests the Zero Trust platform narrative is gaining traction with larger, more strategic commitments.

The AI Security Catalyst

The clearest driver is Security for AI. Jay Chaudhry noted that “Security for AI bookings increased more than 50% sequentially in Q4 on top of a strong Q3” — Jagtar Chaudhry, Chairman and CEO · 2026-09-03, and the pipeline is building fast—Kevin Rubin disclosed a 75% sequential increase in security for AI pipeline. This is not just a bolt-on; it's becoming a land-and-expand engine, with 70% of these deals including data security components. The market is coalescing around the same theme—global keywording also highlights "Agentic AI" and "Security for AI" as top movers—but Zscaler’s in-line architecture gives it a differentiated position. The launch of Agentic SecOps next week (September 9th) extends the platform from prevention into response, combining Red Canary's MDR experience with Zscaler's telemetry. As Jay put it,

We are now seeing the impact of fully autonomous AI attacks. They have already been multiple high-profile incidents from 3 leading frontier model companies where agents went rogue and took unauthorized actions. This includes the recent Hugging Face incident where a swarm of agents went to extreme lengths to break out of a sandbox training environment, get onto the copay network and move laterally to conduct a sophisticated attack. This is driving urgency at the highest levels and Zscaler is uniquely equipped to meet the moment.

Jagtar Chaudhry, Chairman and CEO · 2026-09-03
This urgency is translating into direct AI security win rates: a Fortune 500 transportation customer selected Zscaler over two major platform competitors, and a large asset manager displaced a private DSPM vendor.

Monetization Beyond Seats

The shift toward Z-Flex is reshaping the revenue model. In fiscal 2026, Z-Flex generated over $1.7B in TCV, with customers seeing an average ARR uplift of nearly 30%. The flexibility to swap modules and add new products without a new procurement cycle has shortened sales cycles and increased deal sizes. More importantly, non-seat-based metered usage solutions contributed ~30% of new ACV, and ARR tied to these offerings grew over 100% year-over-year. This is a structural shift—while seat-based tools like ZIA/ZPA form the base, the future growth is in workloads, branches, and AI agents, all consumption-priced. Kevin Rubin highlighted that “As our platform expands beyond users to protect branches, workloads, AI applications and AI agents, our monetization model is also expanding.” — Kevin Rubin, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-09-03

Balancing Growth and Cost

Management is walking a careful line between investing in this opportunity and managing margin. Q4 non-GAAP operating margin hit a record 24.3%, up 220bp YoY, but they guided to ~23.7% for FY27. The modest decline reflects deliberate investment in sales capacity and product development, plus elevated CapEx due to memory and storage pricing. Kevin noted, “We expect CapEx to remain elevated during fiscal '27 due to higher component pricing, especially memory.” — Kevin Rubin, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-09-03 To fund these investments, they're reallocating resources via a small workforce restructuring (affecting ~3% of employees) and adding dedicated new-logo sales reps. The guidance implies ARR growth of ~17% and revenue of ~17%—a deceleration from 25% in fiscal '26, but with a sustainable growth algorithm The revenue ramp from $850M in the last reported quarter (Q3 FY26) to the guided $3.9B for FY27 is a testament to the platform's elasticity. The prior quarters’ early look had already flagged a tempered view for FY27 relative to the strong Q4, but the Q&A clarified that the sales leadership transition was a key factor. “We are taking a prudent approach. We do recognize when leaders of this nature change that it can have some disruptive nature to those organizations.” — Kevin Rubin, Chief Financial Officer · 2026-05-26 The acceleration in Q4 suggests some of that prudence may not be needed, but management is conservative by design. “Our AI Security solutions, which are starting small but growing pretty rapidly, are all non-user-based, rather they are token-based.” — Jagtar Chaudhry, Chairman and CEO · 2026-02-27 Zscaler’s story is not merely about beating quarterly numbers—it's about positioning itself as the security fabric for the agentic economy. With over 950 Zero Trust Everywhere enterprises and a record pipeline, the company is riding a macro wave where zero trust architecture is becoming mandatory for AI adoption. The stock has rallied 25% over the last 90 days, yet it remains 54% below its 2021 peak, implying the market still has room to re-rate if the AI security bets pay off.
